They only snapped out of it because they started getting healthy again. This isn't entirely true. Edmonton started the year with several injuries and it grew to around 13 players injured around the middle of their win streak. Only when injuries reached around 20 players did the Eskies inevitably start to falter and go on a losing streak. They still have some players out with season-ending injuries while pulling off several wins recently. In contrast, once the Bombers lost 3 or 4 players to injury they quickly went into the tank sporting a 1-2 record going into this weekend's game and looking pretty mediocre to awful in all of them. The Esks were able to handle several injuries at the beginning of the season (many more than the current Bombers) and still win. The Bombers play took a noticeable downturn with just a few players out of the lineup. On that basis, it is pretty clear a team like the Esks has better depth than the Bombers at this point in time. Turn up enough complaining about Hall coming on the radio, the Bomber BOD and many others and I'm certain he's going to be getting chucked outta here. O'Shea was a defensive player, a linebacker. He knows defense and he knows and understands Richie Hall's system. He loves it, obviously. Same with Sam Hurl. O'Shea always defends Hurl, a fellow linebacker, and says he is doing exactly what is asked of him. Considering all the love, and knowing how resistant O'Shea is to ideas that run contrary to his way of thinking, I can only conclude that both Hall and Hurl will be back next year and for many years to come.
Blueandgold Posted October 29, 2017 Report Posted October 29, 2017 The Bombers were missing Matt Nichols, Darvin Adams, Travis Bond, Maurice Leggett, and Jamal Westerman yesterday. Those are easily five of our top seven or eight players. You can’t replace high end talent like that. Fatty Liver, blue_gold_84 and Noeller 3
Mark H. Posted October 29, 2017 Report Posted October 29, 2017 IMO, this past game for the Bombers was the equivalent of several key players being out for the Stamps Nichols = Mitchell Harris = Messam Adams = McDaniel Westerman = Hughes Bond = Erdos Leggett = Singleton Fatty Liver, Noeller, blue_gold_84 and 2 others 4 1

Take BLM out of the mix in Calgary and see how well they do. The Bombers have only been without Nichols for 3 quarters. They looked bad in the previous 3 or 4 games. Jennings looked quite fine yesterday. Ottawa's second stringer Tate was fine before he went down. It would be one thing is Davis was playing well and went down like Tate and the fever came in and sucked like Lindley. That, of course, is not the case. Both looked terrible. Right now, the Bombers appear to have the worst 2nd stringer in the league at QB. Edmonton had many key injuries at the beginning of the season in the midst of their winning streak - more than the current Bombers have. Only when they reached around 20 players on the injured list, did the Esks go into a complete funk. The Bombers are nowhere near that number. Edited October 29, 2017 by blueandgoldguy

Depends who's injured - the Esks went into the tank when they started losing stars like Bowman. The biggest boost for the Esks was not players getting healthy again, but the return of Derrell Walker.

After watching some of the throws Reilly made yesterday, even while take some big hits, next week in Calgary will be the least of our concerns. He wasn't just ducking and chucking - he was throwing his receivers open by going to outside shoulder.
pigseye Posted October 29, 2017 Report Posted October 29, 2017 The defense has been bad since game 1, the signs have been there all year and nothing has been done. This regime deserves any heat they get for not being proactive. Tracker and blueandgoldguy 1 1
Tracker Posted October 29, 2017 Report Posted October 29, 2017 if the games this past weekend were the measure, the Eskimos are the team most likely to come out of the western conference. I can't believe the pounding the Reilly has been taking this year and can still stand upright without assistance, form complete sentences and even win games.
Blueandgold Posted October 29, 2017 Report Posted October 29, 2017 I’m not sure I’m ready to hang the defence out to dry for an inept offence that had struggled generating a first down. There’s no doubt that it’s time to sit a guy like Hurl, and utilize our DI spots better than dressing two backup WIL’s.

No the Esks were missing their starting running back - one of the best in the CFL - at the beginning of the season. Their second string running back went down shortly thereafter. The third stringer came in and played quite well during the Eskimos win streak. This shows good depth. Cory Greenwood - a Canadian linebacker injured all season JC Sherritt - injured first game of the season after rupturing achilles Sean Whyte - best field goal stats this year before he was injured in the 5th game and 93% last year. Imagine if we lost Medlock? Simeon Rottier - out most of the season Adarius Bowman - missed 6 or 7 games...eskimos won 4 of the 7 games on their winning streak without him which shows they can win without a key receiver Derrell Walker - lost him to the NFL for the first half of the season. One of the best in the CFL is not so easily replaced in the off-season. So these are some of the key starters the Esks were missing at or near the start of the season during their winning streak. Several of these are still out of the lineup. There have been more in and out since then as well. The fact that the Eskimos were able to maintain such an impressive winning streak without all these players is impressive and is a testament to their depth. Only when injuries reached ridiculous proportions (20 plus players) did the inevitable losing commence. TBURGESS and Tracker 2
Blueandgold Posted October 29, 2017 Report Posted October 29, 2017 Bowman shouldn’t even playing for Edmonton. Guys like Duke Williams have outplayed him this year. Corey Greenwood has never even played a down for Edmonton, Derrell Walker wasn’t on the team. Those Edmonton injuries aren’t that big. They also made moves to acquire guys like Aaron Grymes and John Chick which has helped them. blueandgoldguy 1
rebusrankin Posted October 29, 2017 Report Posted October 29, 2017 Bowman looked good yesterday and is better than any of our receivers not named Adams or Dressler.

If you aren't ready to make a judgement on this defense after the last 2 seasons of data, I have no idea what would settle your mind. Maybe they should purposefully take a knee every play and let the opposition score at will?

wbbfan Posted October 29, 2017 Report Posted October 29, 2017 No. That said we all know hall has gotta go. An argument can be made for plop as well. We NEED a new DC, and some adjustments to the ratio. A bit more depth, same as every team in the league really. We may have to walk away from expensive imp vets in order to make cap room to re tool. But I dont think we will do that. rebusrankin 1

Givens is clearly an elite level talent/athlete but is still new to the league and in an offense that doesnt make wrs look good very often. And is bad at making use of specific threats. Flanders/harris? One starts at a flanker/wr spot the other was leading the league in catches. Idk if it was you, but earlier this season this board was FILLED with people saying we didnt have 1 good wr. Then it was ok dressler but thats it. Then oh adams but thats it. WR talent isnt the best in the league. But it also is far from an issue here. Weve seen Wr cores of milt and a bunch of luke warm (at best bodies). This isnt that. How many top notch wrs do we need? More is allways better, but if we had to address positions of need right now, itd be mlber, dc, starting NIs, and Rb. Pound for pound i would take our wr core over the stamps.

Oh we were talking about the West semi

Imagine what we would be if we had the WR's teams like BC, Sask & Edm have. Why can't we find guys like that? Other than Adams we don't have any other receivers who can stretch the field as a vertical threat. Teams know we can't throw deep & we are an easy team to defend. How do you defend against Burnham & Arceneaux or Zylstra & Walker? Reilly just puts the ball up deep & lets his receivers do the rest. We can't do that. We need to build a receiving corp like those teams. My question is why can't we find those type of big & physical receivers?

Sask has a couple real good young talents, they signed duron carter and we dont want duron carter. Bc has a very good core, but all they do is sling it deep. Edm also has a couple real good young wrs, a qb that gives them a ton of jump balls to go make plays on and the most over rated droppingest wr in the league who we also wouldnt want (back). But dressler and adams on those teams in place of their top 2 wrs and little to nothing changes. The depth of sasks wr core would be impactful for us if we swapped entire cores out right. But i still wouldnt do it. Weve found tons of talented wrs. Weve done a poor job of utilizing them and recognizing what we have had. The difference is not wr core. Its the offensive system. Imagine if those teams had plops play calling, poor use of talents below the no1 wr (look at the production from dressler and adams when both are on the roster, then look at each when only one is on the roster). if they threw the huge majority of their passes on 2nd and X short of first down yardage how many of those teams would do well?
