The nonstop fixation with the side defencemen play on is one of the most baffling things about hockey fans.

Its the stopping of the puck with your backhand as it comes along the boards that looks ugly.

You learn how to do that when you're 12 years old.  Every defencemen at the pro level has played both sides.

It's a massively-overrated-by-fans thing, no question.....guys may have a preference, but they can all play both sides, no problem, otherwise they wouldn't be at the pro level.

This has come up before.  Some people will argue til the're blue in the face that it doesnt matter.  But in fact it does matter.  There are few players who can play either side and a few that excel on their off-side.  But some will tell you it absolutely matters.  So in the end, yes it matters.  And ultimately, if fans want to discuss it, so be it.  It is, after all, a discussion forum.

Of course it is preferable to play the hand you like.  But if one player is better than the other, you play the better player regardless of hand.

So you think Ben Chiarot is that much better than Poolman...?  Interesting take.
