Wanna-B-Fanboy Posted August 2, 2019 Report Posted August 2, 2019 An 18 year old just won the google science fair with a way to extract microplastics from water... it's pretty awesome. SCIENCE for the win! https://www.businessinsider.com/microplastics-water-pollution-solution-from-google-2019-8 Quote Today, the substance (ferrofluid) helps control vibrations in speakers and seal off electronics so they don't become clogged with debris. It's also a key part of Ferreira's plan to remove microplastics from water. "I absolutely love ferrofluid," said Ferreira, who makes his own version of the liquid by suspending magnetite powder — a mineral found naturally on Earth's surface — in vegetable oil. (The leftover oil from fast-food chains like McDonald's works well, he said.) Unlike rocket fuel, Ferreira's mixture isn't harmful to the environment, but it does attract plastic from all types of water, including rivers and oceans. Ferreira said the most unique part of his mixture is that it can be used to remove plastic from wastewater — water discarded from homes, businesses, and industrial plants, for example. Studies have found that the world's wastewater treatment plants aren't equipped to filter out microplastics, even though they're major contributors to microplastic pollution. Here is a quick demonstration of the process: Mark F 1

It said additional income can make a significant difference in a person's emotional well-being up to the point when they earn $75,000 a year. He then made the decision to increase the salaries for all of his 120 employees in Seattle, raising the minimum salary to $70,000 -- and slashing his $1 million salary by 90% in order to make it happen. The move doubled the pay of about 30 of his workers and gave an additional 40 significant raises. This is the business model that should be adopted by all corporations.

Wanna-B-Fanboy Posted January 26, 2020 Report Posted January 26, 2020 Nice to see this! https://www.wthr.com/article/seymour-teen-honored-raising-money-baby-box-saved-child Quote An Indiana teenager is receiving praise for the baby box that helped save a newborn this week. Hunter Wart, 19, made it his goal nearly two years ago to raise money for a Safe Haven Baby Box in his hometown of Columbus. After he raised $10,000 by collecting scrap metal and mowing lawns, the city declined his offer to put a baby box in Fire Station 3. Seymour took him up on the offer and the box was installed last June. https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/25/us/teenager-baby-box-newborn-baby-trnd/index.html Quote Monica Kelsey, founder of the nonprofit organization, began the initiative to give distressed mothers a safe place to drop off newborns while remaining anonymous. Safe Haven Baby Boxes also installs safety drawers, which work similarly to the boxes, and runs a 24-hour hotline for mothers in crisis. Kelsey, who was abandoned as an infant herself, said around two to three abandoned babies died every year in Indiana before the initiative was launched. Since then, the state has had no abandoned babies die, she said. "These babies were left in trash cans and dumpsters. One was left at the door of a hospital. That baby had frozen to death before he was found," Kelsey told CNN. Good to read about these things! Mark F 1
