Considering it was Lawrence, you can't help but think that it was part of the gameplan going into to hit him in the head first chance they got to try to take him out of the game.

I absolutely agree with you. Intent to injure is the part that is subjective. Making it controversial.

Making the defensive player that made head contact sit out for the same amount of time of the injured player is purely objective

Not exactly.  What if it's career ending?

Referees presumably have experience and know the sport.  Much like a judge who would differentiate between acts based on intent.  They need to be able to make that call, it's not black and white.
