war nerd spew: inflatable weapons go at least as far back as WWII.  In the runup to d-day, the Allies had an entire army worth of inflatable tanks staged to attack Pas de Calais.  Nazis bought it hook line and sinker; even after the Allies were ashore in Normandy Hitler refused to authorize a full counterattack because he was looking at photos of this massive undeployed floaty army and that convinced him that Normandy was a feint.

so yeah, inflatable weapons are old-school antifascist friends.

Putin is all in on sustaining the war on Ukraine, no matter the cost. His survival literally depends on something/anything he can sell as a victory. The scary thing is that he may not be worse than anyone who replaces him.

No worries. As I wrote that, I questioned whether or not it sounded a little sarcastic.

The claim comes after Russia’s federal police force said that “armed Ukrainian nationalists” had entered Bryansk region, near Russia’s border with Belarus. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the episode as a “terrorist act,” saying that the fighters opened fire on civilians. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, called the Russian report a “classic deliberate provocation.”

Key developments

• The Russian Volunteer Corps called itself a “liberation army that came to its own land” and urged Russians to “take up arms and fight Putin’s bloody regime” in a video posted to social media. It also said that the Russian claim that Ukrainians entered Bryansk was “a lie of the Kremlin propagandists.”

Russian Officials Demand Assassination of Zelensky in Leaked Texts

Russian lawmakers are demanding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky be assassinated and his country bombed into oblivion after what the Kremlin touted as a “Ukrainian terrorist attack” in a border region early Thursday.

Every level of Russian government from Vladimir Putin to the Federal Security Service and regional governors blamed the Ukrainian military for the attack in Bryansk, which authorities said had left two people dead and a child injured. The official version of events from the Kremlin is that Ukrainian “Nazis” and “saboteurs” stormed over the border into Russia, invaded two villages, shot up a car, took hostages, and scattered explosive devices throughout the area.

Though a group of Russian volunteers took credit for the mayhem—led by a well-known Russian neo-Nazi who has openly spoken about his past cooperation with the security services, though he now says he is fighting for Ukraine—the incident seems to portend a dark new phase in the war against Ukraine. One after one, Putin’s minions in parliament and mouthpieces on social media immediately called for revenge, arguing that the “red line” had been crossed and it was now time to go to war for real (as opposed to just lobbing cruise missiles at civilians.)

"If the United States does not hit the brakes, and continues to speed down the wrong path, no amount of guardrails can prevent derailment, which will become conflict and confrontation, and who will bear the catastrophic consequences?"

Pretty gross rhetoric from the Chinese Foreign Minister.
