Goalie Posted February 22, 2020 Report Posted February 22, 2020 So.. This thread here.. JFC.. If it proves 1 thing its that the Eastern Media really dont know **** do they. Goes from he wants to retire to thinking bout it to hes having surgery to hes skating to hes gonna retire to hes not skating to mutual termination to trade to now what? I mean Really... What a ****** up situation and the truth likely will never be known. Im gonna guess tho... Ruffled feathers played a role here especially if hes traded.
The Unknown Poster Posted February 24, 2020 Report Posted February 24, 2020 Im not sure why they’d terminate the contract. If Buff wants to play next year jets should have the option of trading him. Why do him the favour of making him a UFA?

Make him a UFA means u gain cap. Nice crop of UFAs this year. Laine and Pionk gonna get raises next year also. In the cap world cap space is worth lots.

As long as he's on the books, the Jets can't use that cap space.

Per Chevy, he knew two weeks ago Buff wasn’t playing this year which cleared the cap space. So if he isn’t playing it relieves them of his cap hit. I assume the issue is if he had come back they’d have to negotiate a scenario as to what happens to the rest of his money. Should be pretty clear. He’s suspended. but if Buff wants to play next year the jets hold the cards. They should keep him til the summer and trade him then. If he plays next year he’s an asset. They shouldn’t give it away.

Being suspended doesn't mean the space is cleared going forward. They can't add a contract while putting Buff on suspension because he, presumably, can come back. Also, he can appeal the suspension. It only clears until the end of the season, then he's back on the payroll. They could add someone on an expiring deal but nothing else.

Chevy himself said today he knew he had buffs cap space because Buff was not coming back this year. So if they wanted to make a big splash at the deadline they could. works the same next year. This summer they have to account for Buff until they trade him. The only reason to terminate would be if no one wants to trade for him (which is unlikely if he is coming back) or he makes no effort to come back and they want finality to it. Interesting that they can decide if he has one or two years left. I wonder if they have to pay him for this year If they want his contract to be a one year remaining. Or if he simply loses it due to suspension. Would any teams want him on a two year deal or would they prefer the one year?
Floyd Posted February 25, 2020 Report Posted February 25, 2020 If he's suspended without pay and trade deadline is passed, why terminate him? I'd hold him under contract until after we sign a UFA D in the summer... The Unknown Poster 1
FrostyWinnipeg Posted February 25, 2020 Report Posted February 25, 2020 Only way to terminate the contract is for retirement or buying out of the contract right? The way this is going it'll probably be the latter.

Retiring does not terminate the contract. blue_gold_84 1
