Ambrosie started off great....seemed to have the right idea. The league's dealing with the pandemic obviously was bad, and Ambrosie wears that. I don't know who or what might do a better job than him......a former player with a successful business background.........but hopefully they can find someone.

Do we know any former players with a successful business background?

I'm not sure if we should wade into this one.

who's the guy from Montreal that wants the gig? There was something just recently...I can't remember who, but a Francophone former Alouettes player...

That would be: Marc-Olivier Brouillette has announced his candidacy for the position of Canadian Football League commissioner.

The name brought up by Dunk currently is former Winnipeg resident, Ken Derrick (spelling?) who last worked with the San Diego Chargers and now is involved with the SAN Diego Foundation. For more info listen to the clip posted earlier...

I'm not sure I can get on board with that... unless not falling flat on your face right out of the gate is considering great...

One of the first things that happened under his tenure was the Diversity Is Strength campaign, which was an absolute home run, and he was the first commissioner to make a point of going to each stadium specifically to talk to fans about what they like, didn't like, would like to see, etc etc..... I remember vividly a tweet from some Toronto based talking head (Madani or someone like that...) saying "Ambrosie's start to the role has been like Yoenis Cespedes in the home run derby....non stop crushing it..." and that always stood out to me. The good will hasn't stayed with him, unfortunately...

Mark Cohon was an extremely popular Commissioner with the fans & media. Was there ever a picture taken of him when he wasn't amiling from ear to ear & was always so positive & upbeat? He talked to as many fans as he could around the league but he just seemed more polished with the media than Ambrosie. I think things improved under Cohon with attendance up for a bit before falling off the past 3 years under Ambrosie. I think the guy is done like a cold dinner. He'll be the one taking the fall for the lost season this year. I don't think the CFL can come back with him as Commissioner. They'll need a fresh face for a new start.

Of course Cohon was more polished with the media; his background and business acumen are totally different than Ambrosie's. Bit of a tough comparison to make between the two, IMO. Same goes for a comparison between Ambrosie and his predecessor, Jeffrey Orridge. Of the three, I'd say Cohon had the most success during his tenure, his biggest feats being a lucrative TV deal and the expansion into Ottawa. His tenure was the also longest, at least to this point in time.

I have to disagree completely with your point on attendance. Official figures are difficult to find when it comes to this ridiculously secretive league but cfldb.ca is pretty reliable as a resource. Let's be honest: it isn't like attendance was phenomenal league-wide prior to Ambrosie taking the reins as commissioner. Attendance has been a major topic of discussion for years with the CFL, with attendance figures having declined consistently for several seasons, as far back as when Cohon* was commissioner.
Here's the attendance average per season and the difference compared to the previous season (I've eliminated the decimal):

2012: https://stats.cfldb.ca/league/cfl/attendance/2012/ (28,190 / +423) [this was the last time an increase in attended has occurred]
2013: https://stats.cfldb.ca/league/cfl/attendance/2013/ (27,006 / -1,184) [substantial decrease despite the inaugural season at IGF]
2014: https://stats.cfldb.ca/league/cfl/attendance/2014/ (25,286 / -1,720) [this is noteworthy considering it was Ottawa's inaugural season]
2015: https://stats.cfldb.ca/league/cfl/attendance/2015/ (24,733 / -553)
2016: https://stats.cfldb.ca/league/cfl/attendance/2016/ (24,692 / -41)
2017: https://stats.cfldb.ca/league/cfl/attendance/2017/ (24,644 / -48)
2018: https://stats.cfldb.ca/league/cfl/attendance/2018/ (23,855 / -789)
2019: https://stats.cfldb.ca/league/cfl/attendance/2019/ (22,916 / -939)

Seven consecutive seasons of decline. Three commissioners.

It's worth noting this trend has affected most professional sports, if not all of them. Unfortunately, the CFL relies heavily on its gate-driven revenue, so that throws a wrench into things more than any other professional league on the continent. Compared to sports heavyweights like the NFL and MLB, the CFL is essentially a featherweight when it comes to its financial footprint. If you're going to claim Ambrosie is solely responsible for attendance dropping across the CFL, you should be prepared to substantiate that with credible data.

And the CFL's lost season isn't just on him. There is ample blame to be spread around here for how this whole debacle unfolded. I will say his somewhat ham-fisted attempt to get federal financial support is on him to a point but there's a reason this league has executives and they also seemed to do **** all to help things along. A single individual does not make or break a sports league and it's going to take more than just a commissioner to get the league back on the right track. I think you're being overly harsh with your criticism and the claim the CFL "needs a fresh face for a new start" is an exaggeration, especially when you consider why the league didn't operate this year. You seem to have some personal issue with Ambrosie and it's hindering your ability to look at this situation through a lens of objectivity.

* it's hardly a relevant point but it does show that attendance issues have dogged this league for some time regardless of who has the title of CFL Commissioner

My issue with Ambrosie, Cohen, etc, etc, etc, is that none of them have made real efforts to grow the next generation of fans. Individual teams have their own promotions and whatnot, and the CFL has had some partnerships with the Family Channel but nothing sustained and focused.

It's fine to try to attract International viewers but there is a whole generation of Canadians that does not care about the CFL. Never mind the new immigrants who are here and are interested in new activities.

Grow the game at home. Invest and focus on making the CFL relevant and fun for youth.

The CFL needs to stop trying to charge premium prices for their product.

I'm a huge CFL fan and I'll pay a lot more than most people to see games but cripes at least in Calgary they are pricing themselves out of being an affordable family outing unless you want the crappiest seat in the house.

Yup, I've been saying this for years. Ticket costs are too much for the average family. And it's very likely that they will continue to rise. They're pricing themselves out of their own market. I understand why, but it doesn't change that it's a dangerous way to operate. And that doesn't even include the GC tickets.

Well diversity is strength is low hanging fruit given what's been going on in the States... and talking to fans.. sorry but what does that accomplish? I talk to fans every day on sites like these and they're morons.

Except you, of course. ;)

I think Ambrosie sucks.

I was at the stadium today, picking up something from the store and it hit me hard when I was up close to the stadium, wishing I was inside, watching a game. September, October, November are tough months this year.

Had the exact same feeling when we were home a few weeks ago. We went to the Bombers Store to buy stuff, and as we were walking back to the car, I stopped at the fence and looked in at the empty stadium. A sickening feeling. I would go for CFL ball 12 months of the year, but right now, especially, it's tough......

I had a lazy weekend at home last weekend and watched a few bomber games from last year and I got hit with the reality of not having had the opportunity to watch fall football for real. Just sucks.

At least you took the time to respond with some thoughtful insight. Oh, wait...

And you actually wonder why so many here continuously disagree with your insufferable opinions.

And if I went into some explanation of  why I'd like to see Ambrosie fired, you'd say the same thing so why bother? I've already stated my case many times as to why I think he's one of the worst Commissioners we've ever had. Why he seems so in over his head. How botched this season. How he also botched asking for financial aid from the Trudeau Government. How he has ghosted & continues to ghost fans by helping the CFL become absolutely invisible after they shut down. How there are no plans being made public on what they are going to do as a league in 2021. How he should spend more time growing the game here in Canada than in places like Poland, Mexico & Japan. My advice is if you don't like what I have to say then block me. Please. I wouldn't mind at all. Matter of fact, I'd welcome it. The only insufferable one in this conversation here is you.
