It hits you when you look at the windows — for generations, Christmas displays were a draw at the Hudson's Bay Co.'s onetime flagship store in downtown Winnipeg.

This year, they were never set up.

Like many Manitobans, the CEO of Winnipeg Economic Development has fond memories of The Bay at Christmas.

"I remember as a kid coming down here with my mom. We would do one Saturday of Christmas shopping," said Dayna Spiring.

"The Christmas floor up there — we would go and spend an hour going through the Christmas decorations."

Now, Spiring has been left to figure out what comes next for the recently shuttered 650,000-square-foot building, widely deemed as historically priceless yet economically worthless.

While there is nothing concrete yet, she says the phone is ringing — mostly from the private sector.

"It may be some combination of residential, office, retail, restaurants," she said. "I think there will be multiple uses in this building, at the end of the day commerce has to prevail."

Gonna be worth keeping an eye on this downtown icon as its future is determined in the coming months/years.

Fun fact: Dayna Spiring, who heads the advisory committee for the future vision of this building, is also the Chair on the Board of Directors of the WFC.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba released a report Thursday on its investigation into the April 8, 2020, death of 16-year-old Eishia Hudson. The girl was shot and killed following a pursuit, in which police say she drove a vehicle involved in a liquor store robbery in Winnipeg's Sage Creek neighbourhood that day.

During its investigation, the IIU talked with 14 civilian witnesses — including three of the four passengers in the vehicle driven by Hudson, in addition to reviewing forensic evidence, and audio recordings of a 911 call and Winnipeg police radio transmissions.

The IIU also talked with several witness police officers. The officer directly involved in the shooting declined to be interviewed, but provided notes and a prepared statement, the IIU said.

The report includes an account from a witness who recorded cellphone video of part of the incident at the intersection of Lagimodiere Boulevard and Fermor Avenue.

The IIU report says it had referred the case to Manitoba Prosecution Services, which recommended that no charges should be laid.

An excerpt of the 45-page report prepared by the prosecution service was included in the IIU report.

"We have concluded that there is no evidence that [the officer] acted outside of the scope of … the Criminal Code [section] that governs the use of force by police officers," the prosecution service wrote...

Here is the cellphone video they are referencing. It is embedded in the overall story. For clarity’s sake, the shooting victim was the driver of the stolen vehicle that was involved in a police pursuit after a liquor store in Sage Creek was robbed.

Just perplexed as to why that was posted.

Oh when he got cut from CKY it was considered big deal, then when he left his gov't job people were wondering why. Now we know...pursuing his dream of design.

Okay so he's a former broadcaster. That makes sense then. I had no idea who he was as I live in Calgary. He has to do what he has to do.
