I am not sure why Manitoba's numbers seemed to be viewed as inaccurate or some kind of conspiracy.  We have been taking the same social distancing measures as other provinces, and we really only have the one large urban centre.  The rest of the population is more dispersed and less likely to have a major infection outbreak.  IMO, Manitoba's numbers are about what you'd expect. 

Let’s not forget Manitoba enacted Social Distancing at the same date as many other places but were way behind in infection rates. It has said we acted a full week early than other jurisdictions based on arrival of the virus in our area.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Conservative Leader Andrew Sheer of being “irresponsible” Sunday, while the Green Party said Scheer was holding Parliament hostage and putting people’s health in jeopardy.

 

“My blood is boiling,” Green parliamentary leader Elizaberth May told HuffPost Canada Sunday evening. “This is not acceptable.”

May was livid after Scheer refused to sign an agreement with the other parties earlier on Sunday to avoid the return of the House of Commons on Monday. 

“I’m so distressed,” the Greens’ longtime leader said. The Conservatives “refused to do what was expected,” she said, when MPs agreed to put the Commons on hold until April 20th — a date, she said, was selected as a placeholder when the pandemic was just developing. “It’s now obvious that no one should have regular Parliament meetings starting tomorrow.”

Earlier in the day, Trudeau told reporters that calling MPs back to Ottawa for regular sittings of the Parliament was irresponsible and that while he believes Parliament has a function, it has to be done responsibly.

“Right now, the Conservatives are not taking a responsible approach,” the prime minister said during his daily press conference.

Public health authorities, experts and common sense, he said, all stress that Canadians need to limit their movements.

The Liberals, he added, proposed that some MPs sit in-person once a week and that virtual sittings be added to ensure that MPs across the country have a voice.

“We know that accountability is important, and taking questions every day from the media is a good thing, but it is also important that parliamentarians and opposition politicians get to ask questions of the government, which is why we’ve proposed that the Parliament sit every week in reduced fashion, … a proposal that was accepted by most parties.  “The Conservatives need to work on it a little bit in terms of their own reflection,” the prime minister said.

Sunday, the Conservative were insisting Parliament meet in-person three days a week for two hours. 

 

Such inflammatory BS from the left. If it is safe for 30 people to meet once a week is is not so irresponsible to suggest they do it 3 times a week is it? Not once has anyone other the JT suggested that all members be in attendance. JT has only done it to try and make the Cons look bad. Can’t say that only Scheer is politicking. What has occurred under the COVID-19 crisis is a “Global Adjustment” in the structure of the World economy. In one fell swoop this Global Adjustment (GA) triggers a Worldwide process of bankruptcy, unemployment, poverty and total despair.

How is it implemented? The lockdown is presented to national governments as the sole solution to resolve the COVID-19 pandemic. It becomes a political consensus, irrespective of the devastating economic and social consequences.

This closing down operation affects production and supply lines of goods and services, (Cargill Meat Packing Plant) investment activities, exports and imports, wholesale and retail trade, consumer spending, the closing down of schools, colleges and universities, research institutions, etc.

In turn it leads almost immediately to mass unemployment, bankruptcies of small and medium sized enterprises, a collapse in purchasing power, widespread poverty and famine.

What is the underlying objective of this restructuring of the global economy?  What are the consequences? Cui Bono? 

A massive concentration of wealth and corporate capital,

the destabilization of small and middle sized enterprises in all major areas of economic activity including the services economy, agriculture and manufacturing.

facilitates the subsequent corporate acquisition of bankrupt enterprises

It derogates the rights of workers. It destabilizes labor markets.

It creates mass unemployment

It compresses wages (and labor costs) in the so-called high income “developed countries” as well as in the impoverished developing countries.

It leads to an escalation of the external debt

It facilitates subsequent privatization

It is neoliberalism to the nth degree.

Crippled by mounting debts, what is at stake is the eventual de facto privatization of the entire state structure, in different countries, at all levels of government, under the surveillance of powerful financial interests. The fiction of  “sovereign governments” serving the interests of the electors will nonetheless be maintained.

The first level of government up for privatization will be the municipalities (many of which are already partially or fully privatized, e.g. Detroit in 2013). America’s billionaires will be enticed to buy up an entire city.

Several major cities are already on the verge of bankruptcy. (This is nothing new).

Is the city of Vancouver up for privatization?: “the mayor of Vancouver has already indicated that he feared the bankruptcy of his city.” (Le Devoir, April 15, 2020)

“U.S. households collectively carry about $1 trillion in credit card debt”. No measures are being taken in the US to reduce the interest rates on credit card debt. (It is the same in Canada)

The lockdown impoverishes both the developed and developing countries and literally destroys national economies.

There is a lot of misunderstanding regarding the nature of this crisis.

Several progressive intellectuals are now saying that this crisis constitutues a defeat of neoliberalism. “It opens up a new beginning”.

Some people see it as a “potential turning point”, which opens up an opportunity to “build socialism” or “restore social democracy” in the wake of the lockdown.

The evidence amply confirms that neoliberalism has not been defeated. Quite the opposite.

Global capitalism has consolidated its clutch. Fear and panic prevail. The State is being privatized. The tendency is towards authoritarian forms of government.

That historical opportunity to confront the power structures of global capitalism, –including the US-NATO military apparatus– remains to be firmly established in wake of the lockdown.

In terms of sports or any re-opening, I think we will have to wait and see what happens when areas begin to re-open officially and properly.  We can see why the idiot rallies that the end result is more sickness and spread.  Even the Church services.  Vegas desperately wants to re-open May 1 in stages and assuming they take big precautions it will be interesting to see.

Its not like there will be zero new cases or that they will wait for zero new cases.  There will be COVID for...well, maybe forever.  But widespread until there is a widely available vaccine.  And then you'll have the debate over mandatory vaccines and all those trump nuts refusing the vaccine.

Sports will be back in the summer, with no crowds.  And it will again be a measuring stick as to how successful it can be in terms of managing illness.

Yup, it's the spin offs from the isolation/poverty/despair that nobody wants to talk about. The murders will go up, violent crimes, domestic abuse, when that damage is all tallied up it will make Covid 19 fatality rate look like a spit in the bucket.
