Interesting article. 

Manitoba has released a report showing COVID-19 has disproportionately affected Indigenous, Black and other people of colour in the province.

“This is systemic and it is seen in every jurisdiction,” Dr. Brent Roussin, chief provincial public health officer, said Monday.

Roussin said the province’s race and ethnicity data show a similar pattern to information in other jurisdictions in Canada and around the world.

He said it’s not about people in communities making bad choices. COVID-19 infections are largely linked to pre-existing inequities, including in housing and employment.

“We know people in (Black, Indigenous and people of colour) communities are more likely to live in lower income neighbourhoods, live in overcrowded and multi-generational households,” Roussin said.

“They are also more likely to have low-wage occupations.”

 

Considering that most of the deaths are in care homes - I have to wonder how many low income people actually live in care homes?

The following changes will go into effect March 5 at 12:01 a.m. and will expire on March 25:
• households and gatherings:
     - households can choose one of the following:
              continue designating two visitors to their home; or
              designating a second household so that two households can visit each other, as long as everyone in the house has authorized those designated individuals to visit.
     - gathering limits at an outdoor public or private place to increase to 10 people including for outdoor non-organized sport or recreation activities; and
     - places of worship to have increased capacity size of 25 per cent or 100 people, whichever is lower, with physical distancing measures in place and mask requirements.
• business, retail and restaurants:
     - any types of business to be able to operate with the exception of indoor theatres, indoor concert halls, casinos and bingo halls;
     - retail stores, malls and personal services to have increased capacity limits of up to 50 per cent or 250 people, whichever is lower, with other public health measures still in effect;
     - restaurants and licensed premises to have increased capacity limits of up to 50 per cent, with the requirement for tables to sit with only household members, and other public health measures still in effect;
     - businesses other than casinos to resume operating video lottery terminals, with physical distancing measures and barriers in place; and
     - professional theatre groups, dance companies, symphonies and operas to resume rehearsals that are not accessible to members of the public.
• recreation and fitness:
     - day camps for children to operate at 25 per cent capacity with other public health measures in place;
     - indoor recreation and sporting facilities such as gyms, fitness centres, rinks, courts, fields, ranges, studios, clubs, pools and centres to open at 25 per cent total capacity, with public health measures in place including for spectators, common areas and locker rooms. The requirement to provide one-on-one instructions has been removed;
          gym, fitness centre and pool users must continue to wear a mask while working out and in all other areas of the facility, with the exception of while in a swimming pool;
          dance, theatre and music facilities to open for a total capacity of 25 per cent;
     - indoor recreational facilities such as arcades, go-kart tracks and children’s facilities to open at 25 per cent capacity with physical distancing measures in place.

Recommendations

Based on emerging evidence of the protection provided by the first dose of a two dose series for COVID-19 vaccines currently authorized in Canada, NACI recommends that in the context of limited COVID-19 vaccine supply jurisdictions should maximize the number of individuals benefiting from the first dose of vaccine by extending the second dose of COVID-19 vaccine up to four months after the first. NACI will continue to monitor the evidence on effectiveness of an extended dose interval and will adjust recommendations as needed. (Strong NACI Recommendation)

 

 

This is great news. We'll be getting the vaccine sooner.

Meanwhile in Texas (7620 new cases and 266 deaths today), mask mandate has been rescinded and businesses can operate at 100%.

We have the same **** in Alberta. Rural UCP MLA's want all restrictions eliminated. I get into it with some of my Conservative friends on facebook who feel Covid is a scam & masks are useless. I have one friend who said Florida & South Dakota are normal like Covid never existed there. I just quote the numbers in those States & that's usually it.

This is great news. We'll be getting the vaccine sooner. 

I'm 65 & at least the UCP did something right today by saying I won't be getting the Astra Zenica vaccine even though Health Canada has cleared the vaccine for everyone. Instead anyone 65 & over here will get the Pfizer-Bio Ntech vaccine instead. Not thrilled having to wait 4 months for my second shot but we need to get vaccines into people's arms as quickly as possible.

I hear you and I am sorry for your suffering. I am not sure any government can be blamed for you going bankrupt, you are in the unfortunate position of being in the industry that will be most and longest affected. 

You are a true entrepreneur and will hustle and get through it. Like all the best ones you will find a way.

Public health officials advise two additional deaths in people with COVID-19 have been reported today: 

• a female in her 20s from the Winnipeg health region; and
• a female in her 90s from the Winnipeg health region, linked to the outbreak at Park Manor Care Home.

The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 3.2 per cent provincially and 2.6 per cent in Winnipeg. As of 9:30 a.m. today, 51 new cases of the virus have been identified. This brings the total number of lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba to 32,051.

Case investigations continue and if a public health risk is identified, the public will be notified.

Today’s COVID-19 data shows:

• zero cases in Interlake-Eastern health region; 
• 26 cases in the Northern health region;  
• zero cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region;  
• three cases in the Southern Health-Santé Sud health region; and  
• 22 cases in the Winnipeg health region.

The data also shows:

• 1,143 active cases and 30,005 individuals who have recovered from COVID-19; 
• 62 people in hospital with active COVID-19 as well as 119 people in hospital with COVID-19 who are no longer infectious but continue to require care, for a total of 181 hospitalizations; 
• nine people in intensive care units with active COVID-19 as well as 15 people with COVID-19 who are no longer infectious but continue to require critical care, for a total of 24 ICU patients; 
• the total number of deaths in people with COVID-19 is 903; and
• the total number of confirmed variant of concern cases of B.1.1.7 is six and B.1.351 is two, bringing the total number of confirmed variant of concern cases to eight. 

Laboratory testing numbers show 2,227 tests were completed yesterday, bringing the total number of lab tests completed since early February 2020 to 531,949.

I think I will be... I have agreed to rent out the kitchen at the south gate bar too so hopefully will have some success there.

It's very difficult to plan for because although events haven't officially canceled its hard to know what they would look like if they did happen. So absolutely no certainty on what to do. The shows are what I've built my business around and have spent several years building a viable show list. 

That and also the arena in Brandon with the carts. So no good summer work, and no winter work

Also to respond to another quote above, you're right it isn't the manitoba govts fault. It's easy for me to be bitter and angry and sometimes it is misguided. Just a very scary situation to be in and the stress levels are quite high

So I'm not sure where exactly MB is at with their vaccine rollout, but AB announced this afternoon that, by delaying second doses, every adult will be vaccinated by the end of June. They are going to be accepting the Astra Zeneca vaccine and giving it to people under 65 starting Wednesday next week. They'll be doing 50-64 year olds over the next month or so. Things really getting going now!

the most recent update is that the general public 89 and older would be eligible next and the first nations would be mid 60s plus

Manitoba made a similar announcement re the 4 month delay on second dose Wednesday. They weren’t quite as bold as committing to first doses by June as there has been no confirmation of dose numbers from the feds yet. 
 

Sounds like J&J will be approved by end of month.

That was my big take away from all of this.... As long as numbers stay consistently low, I can see them allowing fans again. Especially in AB where they just love being a lab rat for this sorta thing...

I'm 65 so happy to hear I'll be getting the Pfizer vaccine.
