China will be whatever suits their goals, or rather, they will present themselves as such. To me, it seems that they have found out how to harness the power of the ant hill as ruled by an autocracy. They can and have become wealthy and powerful by economic means rather than military, and thus, why would they destroy or cripple their markets? It is in their interests to keep us buying their stuff and borrowing money to do so.

Why wouldn't they? They got into trade wars with the rest of the world. It's all about ideology. Destroy the United States without firing a shot or launching a missile  & they control the world economically.

Gotta admit- every time i see that avatar of yours I throw up a little in my mouth. :)

But then I see that it's you and I know the post is going to be one of quality. And you didn't disappoint- great post.

Thanks, wanna-b. Glad we can be together in this, despite our obvious differences :).  What I'd give for us to smack talk about football right now!

Sounds more like Russia's strategy - China has too much to lose...

So on one hand, you're saying that coronavirus is no big deal and that the flu needs to be taken more seriously. But on the other hand, you are criticizing the #1 remedy to the flu crisis (aside from basic hygiene). How the hell does that make any sense?

As far as the effectiveness goes, yes they sometimes miscalculate which strain of the flu is going to be the one that gets bad, but getting the shot is still better than nothing and should help boost your immunity.

As far as the "hazards" go, there is a far, FAR greater chance that you will be harmed from the flu than getting harmed from the vaccine. People who are immunocompromised especially cannot take that risk.

Flu shots are not perfect, and nobody is claiming that they are, but they are better than the alternative (getting seriously ill). And this is coming from someone who, admittedly, hasn't gotten the flu shot for a while, but in light of the pandemic, will be getting it going forward. Always take precautions.

I have never claimed that coronavirus is no big deal so don't make stuff up. As to the flu shot being ineffective, there is lots of support for that argument. I think the intelligent thing to do is weigh both sides before you decide. Personally I don't care whether you get a flu shot or not. I wish you good health either way.

Xenophobic & racist?  Like WTF?

This part "they are our enemies & if allowed would crush us & our way of life".  was probably a little over the top.

Well, they would. If that makes me xenophobic then I'm good with it because I don't trust the Chinese as far as I can toss a boulder.

The Chinese are an economic juggernaut. The Russians aren't. Their power comes from their military. It always has.

Agree 100% and it has not fared them well since WWII. The American military faltered in the seventies and their economy did too. The big change in China came with the end of Mao's "great experiment" and the loosening of control by China's socialists to completely defeat poverty and to allow their version of privatisation & capitalism. The State is never far away but they are smart enough to not mess with what's working.

The Chinese can't be hurt militarily but they can be hurt economically & perhaps changes to supply chains will be the thing that will do it.

Agreed.

That's my point - Russia has nothing to lose....  there's a massive military build up near the Polish border between NATO and Russia - something to keep your eye on

So - as of right now - Coronavirus in Canada already looks flattened...  lockdown seemed to work pretty quickly

1% of cases are critical and 0.017% have been fatal - deaths spiked around March 16-22 but then dropped back down and are not increasing exponentially

It really seems like we do not  have the population density for this virus to overwhelm our entire country

Canada should be able to re-open by Easter if these numbers hold - but I doubt we will - panic has taken hold

Again as of right now - JV5 seems to have a point about the flu v. covid - why don't we care that flu kills up to 650,000 people globally each year... is it just because its mostly in poor countries?

The simple fact is.  Covid is more contagious and more deadly then the flu for which there is a vaccine.   It sucks so many people die.  But it’s not the potential wild fire Covid is.  That’s the difference.

People can say oh look the curve is flattening.  I guess we didn’t need a strict lockdown. When it’s flattening precisely because of a strict lockdown.

every flu season you don’t have major cities like New York over run in hospitals because of it.

it’s really rather simple.

the deniers who reach to grasp the most tenuous of logic do so to use as a wedge to bolster their alt right trump love anti truth nonsense.

We also do not have an idiot as leader of our country supported by idealogues who are willing to sacrifice anyone to hold onto power, nor do we have as many religious nuts who believe that their clergy can save them from anything so long as they believe real hard and keep those tithes rolling in.

This is a really good example of information distortion...

You state facts which we don't actually have - after I cite the main source of data tracking available

No one said we didn't need the lockdown in fact I just said it worked...

And correct flu and covid are different - flu season just over runs poor nations not rich ones.

What facts don’t we have?   I mean I’m sure you’re far more qualified than all the medical experts telling us the facts.  But whatever.

Since Trump already asked Alex Rodriguez for advice on how to handle the pandemic, I guess this is the next logical step. Probably hoping to get golf tips, though.

That's all we need to know, right there.

I heard something a while back that resonated with me. Don't change your behaviour to protect yourself from not getting it. Instead, change your behaviour like you have it.

No, there are no both sides. This is a science argument and science doesn't pick sides. The effectiveness of the flu shot is what it is. Vaccines are for herd immunity and protecting the weakest among us.
