have this vague recollection of being out camping at Big Whiteshell and listening to the game where he was in hospital awaiting that last-minute heart for transplant. I seem to remember Dunigan talking and being super emotional about how they wanted to get the win for him and how much Cal meant to the team. Kindly Cal (ironically)...... absolutely the most important Coach/Manager in Bombers history with Bud Grant (it's a virtual tie, IMO). So thankful to have had him.

The Riders were willing to give up Huff so he came here at or just before the trade deadline in in October 1983.Thirteen months later, we were GC champs. 

Brock found out you don't mess with Kindly Cal & in his book, Brock sure had a lot of regrets for his behaviour. I think his agent Gil Scott gave him some bad advice. Being an older Bomber fan here, I appreciate John Hufnagel very much. 

Wow, that triggers a memory. Had an absolute gun of an arm but no consistent accuracy at all. We use to joke about it playing football at school when we thru it into the turf and would say we were imitating Hall.

IIRC Huf was not brought in to replace Hall specifically. Hall was already injury-prone and with Brock holding out the Bombers needed to make a move as they were clearly in their championship window. The swap for Clements happened but still Cal started Hall the next game because in his words he “owed it to Hall” to start him given how the young QB had shown some promise and gutted it out with his assorted bumps and bruises. Sure enough, Hall gets dinged up and Clements  comes off the bench, in the 2nd or 3rd quarter I believe, to a huge standing ovation, and the club never looks back. But Huf was not brought in to replace Hall as the back-up. Clements broke his collarbone in a game in Hamilton in 1983 so Cal quickly made a move to bring in Huf as the starter to salvage the season as the temp starter. Clements was still able to get back in time for the playoffs where he took a nasty shot from Ruben Vaughn (that would be totally late and clear roughing the QB by today’s rules) that re-injured his collarbone and knocked him out of the game and propelled BC to a comeback win and the Grey Cup at home where they lost to the Argos. The next year a healthy Clements with Huf backing him up led the team to its first Grey Cup in 22 years, despite another dirty hit to the ribs in the West Final in BC that may or may not have collapsed a lung.

Up there with Shannon Garrett as DBs I hated  to watch leave- but didn’t think he had like a 15+ year career. 

Edit: apparently Gerald Vaughn did almost play 15 years.
