Jaxon Posted September 24, 2013 Report Posted September 24, 2013 http://www.cfl.ca/article/cfl-adjusts-eligibility-rules-for-draft I'm still trying to fully understand the changes that were quietly made to the CFL draft eligibility rules a coupld of weeks ago. My understanding is that certain players who would have been eligible to be drafted, such as Coombs from Manitoba, will now have to wait an additional year. Overall it is a good move, but it will mean that there are fewer players available in this year's draft, so it is a bad time to finish last....(or be Ottawa).
Floyd Posted September 24, 2013 Report Posted September 24, 2013 Its an okay year to have a high pick... the top talent will remain but it will probably thin out pretty quick - we should still have a shot at a decent player in the early 3rd round, after that, probably not much
JuranBoldenRules Posted September 24, 2013 Report Posted September 24, 2013 If it is 3 years after they complete their first year of eligibility, that means after their 4th year of CIS eligibility. The only change is that it was previously 4 years (of time, not eligibility) after first enrolling at CIS or NCAA school. Previously, a guy who redshirted in CIS could be drafted after his 3rd year of eligibility, that's the situation Coombs is in. They should just have guys declare for the draft when they are ready, whether they are 19 or 24, regardless of eligibility. Imagine if you're a CIS guy who has CFL talent in your 2nd year, but you are leaving school. When can you be drafted now? If you go to play in the CJFL, are you no longer draft eligible as you would have been before as someone who enrolled in a CIS or NCAA school (like Pencer). Blue-urns 1
Rids Posted September 30, 2013 Report Posted September 30, 2013 The big place that it changes this year is with the NCAA kids. From a group of about 30 players it's down to 4 or 5. The CIS to CJFL rule should still be the same.
iso_55 Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 Glad they made the NCAA rule change. Drafting kids with another year left to play didn't make a lot of sense. Now these players will be drafted their final year & hopefully can come in ready to contribute.
