Hard enough for Walters to re-sign his own FA's, never mind having money left over to shop for outside talent.

Yup, which is why we're still thin at DT.  Stove and Sayles left and we haven't been able to adequately replace them (Stove in  particular).

They've done fairly well keeping the rest of the positions stocked.

Yeah, but we're going to lose players to FA anyways. So, Walters will have to shop a bit. We don't have young depth to step in.

A lot like Vernon Adams.

Low arm talent.  Did alright in Air Raid stuff just reading pre snap where the safeties were and going to prescribed route.  Didn't play much in USFL but looked extremely overmatched when he did.

Kind of guy that could be the short-yardage specialist if he picks up the wedge play.  Ran some zone read stuff so has some ability with option.

Definitely a guy that's been on CFL radar forever.  He took over for injury as a sophomore and then junior year got Eastern Washington to the FCS Championship Game where they got stomped by NDSU.

Basically if he ends up being as good as Prukop he's done alright.  Don't expect him to be slinging it out of the pocket up here, but I guess we'll see.

I don't see Bailey being a guy getting a lot of calls day 1 outside of Ottawa.  Bailey was huge for Brown.  What did he have, 13 or 14 catches with Brown last season?  Like 1/3 of his season total.

But I'm not sure Ottawa will pay him either.  I think like a high 90s with some bonuses kind of deal would be the ceiling for him.  Just hasn't really stepped into that #2 type receiver role whenever it's opened up for a few games.

I can see ssk going for either Bailey or Schoen

If we lose Brown, Brady and Schoen I think it's safe to say our days of attracting players on reputation alone are over.

Brown left because he is young and wants a chance to make much more and be a starter.

If the others leave then so be it,  you can't expect every single person to want to take a pay cut to play in Winnipeg.

Lawler and Bryant took pay cuts purely because of our reputation/culture.    When we have to over pay for free agents and or players take pay cuts to play for other teams at that point I'd be concerned.

It's critical they retain Ricky Walker, mainly because they haven't developed the next DT that could step up and replace him.

we will now see if Brown was a product of his environment...familiarity with scheme...coaching....roster...being all he has known for 3 yrs....or if he is the real deal....Gut tells me he will struggle quite a bit if he comes out of camp as the number 1

The Bombers did Brown no favours trading him to Ottawa. he had a chance to be a very good CFL qb but now he's in Ottawa's system. he'll be trotted out as the starter, beat up. spit out & fail. Just like every qb after Hank Burris that they've had. They've all been used & abused. That's just how that team rolls. Lousy coaching & lousy team. I'm sad we lost Dru Brown but I'm more sad that he ended up in Ottawa.

I have no proof but it seems reasonable to assume that Brown wanted to go there , and the Bombers accommodated him...

I think Ottawa jumped at the early chance to grab Rhymes at a negotiated price so they wouldn't have to take the chance of getting outbid on Schoen, I think they're done.  Rhymes, Acklin, Behar, Shaq Evans, and Justin Hardy offers Brown decent targets.

Rhymes lives in Ottawa during the off season so he signed to play at home.

He is still a free agent come February... If he feels that the ALLCAPS is not a good fit for him, he can leave.

The need to be a starter before we really know if he's ready may turn out to be a career killer for Brown. Who's to say if he signed a 1 year deal with the Bombers & continued to learn under Zach & Buck there may have been a better opportunity next season. I just see this guy as the 2024 version of Nick Arbuckle. Then there's Ottawa itself.  That team & coaching staff  is going to ruin him.

I would like to see receipts on despite a few people on here insisting that Brown would get signed in Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal,  Saskatchewan and Hamilton....

I personally would’ve preferred they gave Brown the keys over Harris but that was just my personal take. I don’t think it ever would’ve happened.

Seems like there wasn't considerable interest in Brown. Ottawa basically willing to give up a 5th in order to get their QB situation sorted out ahead of free-agency.  Winnipeg took what they could get.

Does anyone know who the team teams are that had the most Canadian snaps last year? Those two teams get an extra 2nd round pick.

I know we're one of them. Ed Tait slipped it into one of his recent articles.

Winnipeg now has 10 selections in the 2024 CFL Draft — each of its picks in every round, a bonus in the second round, 20th overall, as a reward for snaps by Canadian players in 2023 and now Ottawa’s fifth-round choice, 40th overall, secured from the Brown trade. The Blue Bombers will pick 8th, 17th, 20th, 28th, 37th, 40th, 46th, 55th, 64th and 73rd overall.

Why would that matter? If we lose Brown, Brady, and Schoen it isn't because they didn't want to be here it's because we could not provide either the money or the opportunity for them to stay.

Now that we are being rewarded for it, playing 8 Canadians at times and relying less on the new Nationalized import rules seems like less of a failure to utilize the roster and more of a strategy to lock down a bonus draft pick. Great incentive to play Nationals even when you have Nationalized imports with snaps to spare

Would you rather have a 2 d round draft pick or  grey cup?

Came real close to doing both... besides, the draft picks are rewarded to the teams with most Canadian snaps by end of the season, not the most Canadian snaps in the championship game... so the two things have little to do with one another...

To answer the question though, obviously a GC! But they are not mutually exclusive.

That bonus 2nd is nice. Three in the top 20 should let us add some good Canadian talent. No projected Sters please.

I could see a trade by us pre or during draft to add an established talent....or move up

cup....Canadian draft is a crap shoot at best...prob 25% of all picks amount to some kind of legit/game changing play...rest you could all throw in a pail and toss one to each team randomly till they all gone

I read somewhere that barely 10% of CFL draft picks make it on to a regular season roster. Of course, your odds of finding one of those 10% goes up with more selections. As we creep towards cap hell trying to extend everyone it's important to have guys in the pipe

That's all I'm saying, winning is better than a bonus draft pick and getting this draft pick made winning games harder than it needed to be.

Coaches set things to hard mode when they set their roster.

14-4, first in the West and a championship berth on hard mode! AND a bonus draft pick! Stop bragging! :)

The bonus draft pick is great but I agree that it is not something that should not affect our roster selection. If we can get it and still win great.

At this point, as much as I like Brady, I'd pay Schoen and go import and cheaper at rb if we can only keep one.

Sign them all and let god sort it out.   Personally id be fine with going over the cap and losing a 1st round pick to keep them all around this year. Is a low 1st round pick worth losing Brady over when we are in win now mode.

I’ve thought this for the last 4 years tbh.

A lifetime of watching the Argos and Lions pay anybody and everybody with zero consequence?

Yeah if Bombers are contenders they should go over every year. **** it.
