Your math is wonky, you cut maybe $320k in assets and you want to add at least $500-$600k in assets, considering they'd have to bring in another player to replace Brady.

It's not last year's salary you need to look at, it is this year's potential salary.

If BO is asking for $250K, savings are way more than 320

I didnt imply those salaries covered it all....Schoen will likely come in at Lawler last year money at top end at most...but u also add an entry level contract at 3rd string qb...and RB....so thats also savings above and beyond what those 3 pulled in...Lawler took a shave..Bryant took a shave...Expect Biggies shave to come...jettison Thomas and Kolo 3 figure salaries....Briggs and Millers...and it adds up...

At this point sure. Still kind of surprised it's only A 5th. Doesn't seem like we got the most return we could have if we traded him earlier. Damn

Meh, it was a foregone conclusion he was going there anyway. They didn't have to send anything. But this allows them to get a contract in place before FA and move onto the next thing on their list.

I'm not sure why people think they didn't get enough, or dropped the ball. Lol. As soon as that clock hit 00:00 in the Grey Cup, Brown was gone. He was never coming back regardless of the wishful thinking. Getting anything for what is essentially an unproven QB who was absolutely going to the FA market is a very solid move.

Good luck to Brown. And Fantastic move by Walters.

The fact that he was leaving is irrelevant.  If the trade was made earlier, before teams started re-doing their QB contracts, there could have been a bigger market/demand and gotten a bigger return.  Key word is "could", there's no guarantee that he could have gotten more for him.

yes....its not a dollar for dollar thing...Plus 3 vet salaries become entry level ones...which equates to more savings...also..Strev won't be holding us over a barrel either.

Our other vet re-signs that should be made..Yosh..Woli...Jeffcoat...aren't big bumps either...they basically at max vale as it is...and nobody is gonna over pay hugely really for any of our vet guys...maybe Yosh by a sad sack like Sask....but Yosh will take a lil less at fair value to stay here anyway, so it's a moot point

Could have should have but didn't. All of that doesn't matter. The facts are Brown was always hitting the market, most teams seemed ok to wait for him. Ottawa became a bit more desperate

Something is better than nothing but he still might reach free agency and see what offers he receives. Sad to see him go but it seemed inevitable. Good luck to him and his continued CFL success.

Anything is theoretically possible until he signs, but I doubt this trade is made unless Brown and Ottawa already had some back door conversations.

How much earlier could we have traded him really. We are two weeks into this year's SMS.

Dustin Crum was sacked 57 times last year. Ottawa is a different animal than Winnipeg.

Obviously true but at the same time I watched Crum and he had a really bad habit of holding onto the ball WAAAAAAAYY too long and trying to houdini out when there was no realistic chance of doing so. Yea...he escaped once in a while but he got caught for a sack more times than not.

Ottawa only sorted out Masoli's contract last week, before doing that they wouldn't have money for Brown.

Yea. It's still very early in offseason '24.

It's supposed to be a deep draft this year so I'd take a flyer on an NFL guy with that type of "free" pick.  We don't currently have any of those high level guys waiting to catch on down south (other than Ford I guess but I expect him back this year).  Could be a good time to add a future prospect.

It’s kind of a double draft because a bunch of U Sports guys deferred.  But there could be some 3rd and 4th year guys eligible who defer to 2025 as well in the next few months.

Brady won't be getting anywhere near $250k, $200k tops including incentives.  For Walters sake hopefully Schoen is looking at the BC receiver contracts and not up at Lawler or Lewis, and pray they don't share the same agent.

None of your math makes sense either. people forget the roster spot has to be filled anyways

There is never as much saved space as people try and project.

For sure. For every player we don't sign you have to subtract at the minimum the CFL minimum salary to calculate SMS relief. Mike Miller, for instance, was making 120k. If we replace him with a rookie our savings are 55k or thereabouts.

And we now have 10 draft picks, so maybe there's some potential to replace some depth/STers with a few more minimum contracts.

Wasn’t their ol banged up too? Green qb hurts too. I would not be surprised if their ol performs better this year.

5th round pick is free lunch. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes for brown in ott.

from his first appearances where he looked like he didn’t belong in any organized football, frantic out of place and panicky. Dru slowly matured into a guy with poise and talent, stepping in when we needed him and performing very well. Great guy and prospect wish him well. Next man up time to find another. And maybe sign strevy.
