Which 17 players will the Blue protect and which 3 players will they then lose to Ottawa?

According to the reference below the Bombers (& all CFL teams) can protect

1. One QB

2. Ten Imports

3. Six Non Imports

4. Later six more non imports

If losing a QB or NI Kicker a club can protect two or one more non imports:

The 2013 Canadian Football League Expansion Draft is a three-round CFL draft scheduled to take place on Monday December 16, 2013.

Rules of the Draft Ottawa will select three players from each of the eight existing teams for a total of 24 players. Ottawa will select eight import players and 16 non-import players with quarterbackskickers and punters eligible within their respective import/non-import categories. Ottawa will be able to select a maximum of two quarterbacks and one kicker/punter, but they may not select any of these three players from the same team. The CFL Commissioner will resolve any dispute related to player eligibility for the Expansion Draft process.     Round one: Import Draft Existing teams may protect one quarterback and ten additional import players, while only being able to select, at maximum, two quarterbacks in the draft. If a quarterback is selected from a team, that team may protect an additional two non-import players in the first round of the Non-Import Draft. If a kicker or punter is selected from a team, that team may protect one additional non-import player in the first round of the Non-Import Draft. Ottawa will select one import player from each existing team in this round.

Round two: Non-Import Draft Existing teams may protect six total non-import players, including the team's one protected quarterback and one protected kicker/punter. If a quarterback was selected in the Import Draft, eight total non-import players may be protected. If a kicker or punter was selected in the Import Draft, seven total non-import players may be protected. If a non-import kicker or punter is to be selected, it must be done in this round and, if so, that team will be able to protect an additional two non-import players in the second round of the Non-Import Draft. Ottawa will select one non-import player from each existing team in this round. Round three: Non-Import Draft Existing teams may protect six more non-import players in addition to those that were protected in the second round. If a kicker or punter was selected in the Non-Import Draft, eight more non-import players may be protected. Ottawa will select one non-import player from each existing team in this round.

Here is my best guess:

QB:

Hall

Ten Imports:

January

Denmark

Wild

Parker

Washington

Stewart

Sears

`Turner

Gilmore

Anderson

Non Imports: 1st six

H. Muamba (FA or not)

Greaves

Watson

Kolhert

Neufeld

Pontbriand

Non Imports: 2nd six

Thomas

Pencer

Volny

Fitzgerald

Etienne

Foster

We lose

Swiston

Morley

Johnson

Ottawa has said they will no draft FA's but don't hold them to it

I can see us protecting Dunn over Parker.  Also hard to believe we wouldn't protect someone like Kelly, or Ford. I'd also move Etienne to the first protected group and could see them wanting to protect Labbe in there somewhere.

Actually Jade will be a FA so no need to protect him for the draft .... so maybe protecting Labbe might be better

Why would we ever protect Pontbriand?

6 NI's

Pencer, Swiston, Neufeld, Watson, H. Muamba, Greaves (possibly C. Muamba instead of Pencer-depends who's seen as a starter next year)

10 imports + qb:

Hall, January, Denmark, Turner, Dunn, Wild, Parker, Sears, Johnson, Washington, Anderson

Do we protect Etienne who is a free agent? What if we protect him & we lose a player under contract? Then he signs with the Riders.

I think it's a chance either way.

If we don't protect a QB, can we protect more of our NI's or something?

That's a good question.

There really is no need for us to protect a QB anyway.

I think it's a legit question.

Kolhert is also a free agent.

Kohlert's the player we sign of the 2 (Etienne & Kohlert). If I was going to gamble, I'd protect Kohlert then make sure he gets signed but leave Etienne exposed to Ottawa. If Etienne isn't selected & wants to come back here then he has to take a significant pay cut to do so based on his numbers the past 3 seasons. All first rounders get paid $85-95,000 a season. He then takes a 25-35% pay cut on a new contract. If he balks then sayonara, kid. Best of luck as he won't get any better offers even in his beloved home land.

No they don't.  None of them do.  If they are lucky they can make that if they reach performance bonuses.  Muamba isn't making close to that in base salary on his current deal.

Do we have to protect a quarterback?

I'm not sure myself, but the wording is : each club may protect a QB and ten additional import players, so I don't think we benefit by not naming a protected QB, unless of course, we give Ian Wild some reps in the last game and name him as our guy. :)

How do they determine who on your roster is a QB... played a game named as QB during the season?

For example... if we had a guy like Sinopoli could we protect him as a QB even though he's played receiver all year?

Obviously there has to be some rules or teams like us would call multiple players who aren't QB a QB for the draft.

guys we aren't going to protect, call them all QB's so that Ottawa can only grab one of them from us and give us more NI's to protect in the second round... etc, call our QB's receivers or whatever because Ottawa won't take them anyways.

I'm assuming the rules are that you are only allowed to have 3 QB's designated as such on your roster, otherwise just have a 46 QB roster... easy peasy

If its generally true that Ottawa won't take a FA,  then we don't need to protect Kolhert add we can cover off Swiston

I believe Fitzgerald can become a key TE/FB/receiver for us in the future

Anybody able to list all the BB's FA's this December?

Yup, iirc HM got a signing bonus of $9,500.00 and $50K in his first year.....I wouldn't pay him $95K in his next contract the way he's been playing in the second half of the season, looks like he's carpet bagging it.

So, you're saying Henoc Muamba makes $45,000 a year? Really, do tell? When Chris Bauman signed with the Stamps after bouncing atound the CFL (inc Winnipeg) after he was selected as the very first pick in the draft back whenever, his salary for a backup depth receiver on the Stamps that they are paying him now is about $135,000 a year according to people in the know. And you're saying Etienne makes what, $35,000?? Forty?? Why would a first round pick sacrifice his body & his time to get paid that? He could get a job paying more money.

Outside of the receivers and Muamba there really isn't a lot of value there.

Of course guys like Labbe and Sorensen would be nice to have back but nobody crucial.

There's no way Bauman made as much as he is now as his current deal (if thats the right number)
