That is an absolutely ridiculous stance, taking a pass on a guy who can improve your team because he's a import...........any HC coming in is going to recognize that the Bombers just don't have enough impact players on the roster, even Burke saw it, and is going to want assurances from management that they will have the opportunity to grab guys when they become available. You only get so many chances to acquire those types of players.

I'm pretty confident that getting a good piece or 2 on the o-line will do more to improve the Bombers than an 'impact' import receiver.

Those pieces don't hit the market.  Name one starting NI OL in the whole league who moved during free agency last off-season.  In the last 3 off-seasons, Labatte, Picard, Rottier and O'Neill are the only guys who could be even loosely called starters that moved in free agency.

Last NI safety to move in free agency, JR Larose, a guy coming back from a tib-fib fracture who almost had his leg amputated.

Free agency is useless when you are building a team.  Draft and develop.

Dressler is a far better receiver than anything we have on the roster and would make the Bombers a better team ala you have to look at acquiring him if he's available. You cut somebody's ass to make room for him, simple as that, it's not even a cap issue.

Would be pretty seamless, get rid of Edwards and that would cover most of it.

But it wouldn't be between Edwards and Dressler, more like Collaros vs. Dressler.

And that still leaves Henoc.

However, this year having so many FAs on our roster, and expected SMS increase, there may be more wiggle room.

Still the argument whether Dressler would be the best investment rests with who will be out there and where our greatest needs are deemed to be.

It's not about Dressler or some fictitious stud NI O lineman.  It's about Dressler or Edwards and the choice isn't even close.

It's not about the money.  Sure Dressler would be more than Edwards, but not so much more that it would mean would couldn't upgrade elsewhere.

Dressler is a game changer.  He is one of the top guys at his position and we only have one guy, Muamba, who is one of the top guys in the league at his spot.  Adding Dressler would make us a better team and isn't that what its all about?

The Saskatchewan Roughriders, 2013 Grey Cup Champions*, disagree.

Dressler would never leave the Riders anyways. If we can get Collaros and Andrew Harris along with retaining Muamba and Matthews I'll be happy.

And if we can get some oline that would be nice.

Have to disagree.

I can guarantee you, if you manage your cap properly, you could easily sign Dressler, Henoc, Collaros and Andrew Harris. And field a competitive team with them on it.

It's not one or the other. A 200k salary (which is probably the average of what these guys will earn) is like 4.5% of your cap. Consider for a moment that the average CFL salary is around 1.2% of the cap, you have PLENTY of room for big name players on a squad.

But that's not how this started.

It wasn't about using the entire SMS, it was about throwing a wad of money at Dressler in FAgency and where that wad would better be spent.

The core of that team was not built through free agency.

Said in the paper today that they had a bunch of candidates to interview for HC, and had around 30 people for the scouting positions that they had to go through. He's got a lot of HR work ahead of him, but it's good to see!

Have learned that Winnipeg gm Kyle Walters is in Regina today interviewing Khari Jones & George Cortez. #CFL

Looks like Walters is doing his due diligence.

Obviously Miller is forcing Walters to hire Khari Jones and this meeting is really just about working out a contract.

I wanna know why they're only interviewing the people in the province "right next door"...the optics of this make me sick. And why only 2 guys? They should interview the whole staff!!

Doubt we can afford Cortez at the price tag he'll demand.

Cortez reportedly made $300k in Hamilton. Burke made $225 last season. Not a huge difference.

i thought it's higher than that.

Cortez reportedly made a bit more than that up to as much as 400k (but probably closer to 325k) but his buyout was something like 700k for Hamilton. Not sure where you heard Burke got paid that much, I heard other numbers and I know nothing has ever been made public.

That being said, he wants close to that much to be a coordinator. His price tag is very close to the same thing in Saskatchewan and they'll open up the vault to keep him. I wouldn't want him as head coach, what does it tell you that Hamilton was willing to pay 700k to get rid of him and now we want to pay him 300k a year to earn that privilege?

You more times than not get what you pay for.

If the Bombers are relunctant to understand this concept when it comes to key positions at the player or management level, they can't be surprised by negative results that ensue and will have to accept we will continue to be mediocre if we continue to fool ourselves.

Giving Khari Jones the keys to this football club because he would come with a cheaper price tag and coupled with errenous rationalizations (such as being a former Bomber) and over-rating of what he brings to the table to justify this decision will more than likely not turn out well.

Especially in sport where careers tend to be short, compensation can not be compromised when it comes to attracting quality talent whether one likes it or not.

I agree, but Cortez as a head coach is probably not the best example of this. He was awful.
