gbill2004 Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 I think it's time to move on from Jovon. Looks like the Bombers may be thinking the same: http://www.goerie.com/article/20140207/SPORTS0509/302079940/John-Dudley%3A-Johnson-set-for-camp-then-free-agency He's unsure how serious the Blue Bombers are about bringing him back despite his being named a CFL East All-Star defensive back four times and winning the league's most outstanding defensive player award in 2011. After picking off 22 passes over his first four seasons with Winnipeg, Johnson had only one interception in each of the past two seasons. He said that's created a misconception that, at age 30, his game has slipped. "I think a lot of people determine how good a season you have by the number of interceptions," Johnson said. "But that's only one part of it. I had 62 tackles last season, which is the second most I ever had. And I played about half the season at safety, which changes a lot of things." Johnson also forced one fumble and recovered two, one of which he returned 48 yards for a touchdown. "I have plenty of football left," said Johnson, who spent one season with the Steelers in 2006 but turned down subsequent reserve/futures contract offers from the Dolphins, Jaguars and Bengals because he felt he deserved at least some guaranteed money. "I haven't really thought much about it yet, but I know I'll play somewhere in 2014."
17to85 Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 yeah that's right it's a misconception because he doesn't have interceptions... Sorry Jovon you played poorly last year and it has nothing to do with interceptions. Blue-urns 1
Atomic Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Jovon was actually pretty good at safety... Definitely an improvement over Cauchy... blitzmore and Blue-urns 2
Zontar Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Suber gets the benefit of the doubt in a bad year, how come not Johnson ? Just askin'
Fred C Dobbs Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 I suspect that Jovon's current contract was negotiated just after he won the MODP award and is very financially advantageous to him. From Tuesday he'll be able to see for himself what he's worth on the open market.
17to85 Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Suber gets the benefit of the doubt in a bad year, how come not Johnson ? Just askin' Suber wasn't as bad and plays a harder position. Johnson was fine at safety, but at corner yikes. Mr. Perfect and Blue-urns 2
B-F-F-C Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 I think Jovon will be wearing red & black this season.
Floyd Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Jj and hef had chemistry... So instead of building on that, we started moving everyone around
JuranBoldenRules Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Jj and hef had chemistry... So instead of building on that, we started moving everyone around Jovon has been terrible the last two seasons, with or without Hefney. blitzmore and Blue-urns 2
Stickem Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Time to move on from Jovon. Watching him in the chase position and getting beat regularly by receivers last year dictates that. We'll sign better or already have. Blue-urns 1
Floyd Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Jj and hef had chemistry... So instead of building on that, we started moving everyone around Jovon has been terrible the last two seasons, with or without Hefney. Well, that's when we started moving him
Blueandgold Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Johnson would be okay as a dime back or at safety, but I'd prefer to just move in a new direction. He's no longer an outstanding corner and he's a terrible punt returner at this stage. Blue-urns 1
Mr Dee Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Prevailing opinions... Govon Johnson Blue-urns 1
gbill2004 Posted February 9, 2014 Author Report Posted February 9, 2014 He's got a bad attitude too. He's too much of a "me first" type player. DR. CFL and Mr. Perfect 2
IC Khari Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Yep, time to move on ... watch JJ have an all-star season with the REDBLACKS LOL (he's still four years younger than the DB we recently traded for)
rebusrankin Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 Has given the Bombers some fantastic seasons but his play has really dropped off the past two years. Time to move on.
Mike Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 I'd bring him back but with nothing guaranteed.
17to85 Posted February 9, 2014 Report Posted February 9, 2014 He's got a bad attitude too. He's too much of a "me first" type player. I really don't agree with that. He played every position in the secondary the last few years and tried linebacker just to try and help the team win. Hefney was a me first guy for sure but I don't get that vibe from JJ. I think he's arrogant and has an ego but name me a defensive back who doesn't... He liked his stats but again name me a football player who deep down doesn't love their stats. I think people just looked for a reason to hate on the guy for poor performance and the me first thing stuck.
James Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 I also don't agree with the attitude bit... But the man is a shadow of his former self... He's not good enough anymore
Guest Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 Time to move on, loved the fact that JJ was willing to give SAM a try due to the issues we had there at the time, but his play has dropped off considerably. Only so many opportunities can be given before the team has to put in someone better, whomever that ends up being.
Armchair GM Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 Jovon might be right that he's got lots of football left... but what the last 2 years has proven is that that football should be at dimeback or safety. The guy can still play, but he's not a cover corner anymore. Mike and Blue-urns 2
kelownabomberfan Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 Jovon was actually pretty good at safety... Definitely an improvement over Cauchy... To be fair though, Pontbriand would have been an improvement over Cauchy...
Jpan85 Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 JJ won't be back with team. Tweeted out that the club called him saying they were moving on. Tough loss no matter what others around here will say. Floyd 1
gbill2004 Posted February 11, 2014 Author Report Posted February 11, 2014 Jovon was actually pretty good at safety... Definitely an improvement over Cauchy...To be fair though, Pontbriand would have been an improvement over Cauchy... Justin Sorensen would have been better than Cauchy last year, at safety.
gbill2004 Posted February 11, 2014 Author Report Posted February 11, 2014 @saraorlesky: Jovon Johnson tweets that the Bombers have told him they won't be bringing him back this season #CFL
