Went out to Grand Beach for the first time last year, since 1990ish.  Much different on the beach, all families.  Everyone packs a lunch and does not spend much money.  Maybe an ice cream.  It was nice to have a beverage in a solo cup without the fear of getting busted and ticketed/kicked out though.

I spent a lot of time out there growing up, I think I had a lot of fun.

Where do people go now the Surf Club is closed down? Victoria Beach? The Birchwood Inn? The Casino on the reserve??

The bar in grand marais as you drive in. I think it's called the Sand Box but I always remember it as Mike Mercury's. It has vlt's, a restaurant, bar, patio, vender etc

The Sand Bar, actually. Lots of people still party there. Bit of a hassle to get to and from, but still good.

Yes, there definitely is much more families at Grand Beach now.  Probably for various reasons such as no booze in the park, Surf Club closing and a lot of people I know go to oasis for the day (which is a poor replacement for Grand Beach but its close).

When I was up there for Sept long weekend, you had to dodge the kids walking up to the Sand Bar in the dark.

Doris's, the long time convenience store at Grand Marais is for sale.  That place has to be a cash cow.  I'd love to buy it.

Ha, I've lots of memories of Grand Marais for me & more specifically the Grand Beach Provincial Park campsite in the 80's... Paaaaarty... Arrr Bee Darrrr! Especially one year in particular. Wow, I know I was there but that's about it. I have memories of having very little memory of that single May long weekend, if you know what I mean. Funny as I barely drink anymore. I like to have a few rum & cokes over Xmas & my birthday but other than that, I drink very little now. Guess I'd fit into the Grand Marais crowd myself.

Here's what ginds my gears. I lost my keys and cell in Mexico and just got back yesterday. I couldn't call anyone cause who memorizes numbers anymore. So I have a cab drop me off at my place and buzz the super at 9:45. No Answer. So I buzz her again at 10:00 and she basically yells at me. She is shocked that I woke her up to get let into my unit and before she comes down to let me in she says "why don't you have a roommate that can let you in?" I said cause I live alone and she asked again like I was lying and I was just too lazy to knock on my own door and bother my roommate. So as she's letting me in she says If I had a roommate, I wouldn't have this problem.

First of all I think people get roommates when they can't afford to live on their own, not for ease of getting let in if you lose your keys. It seems like a pretty frivolous thing to base the decision to get a roommate on.

Secondly isn’t that the kind of **** that a super is there for? I mean if you don't want to get "woken up" at 10:00 by some guy that lost his keys maybe you shouldn't be a super. If that isn't what super's do, what do they do besides get cheap rent?

Yep sounds like she's a first-class ***** and a moron to boot.

But we're talking food here, so....

For soft ice cream, nothing beats the BDI on a warm summer evening & a walk across the Elm Park Bridge.

I''m partial to Sargent Sundae and a stroll across the walking bridge to Assiniboine Park, but then I'm a St James boy through and through

I grew up  in Riverview on Clare Avenue so I'm very partial to the BDI....

We've all been there... I've had some disagreements here with the mods. But, through PMs I think we may have made some headway trying to understand each other which I appreciate. A little respect goes both ways. I give the mods here lots of credit for doing that. On the other forum, is a mod who just arbitrarily shuts down discussion because how dare it strays off topic sometimes. Well, **** that. As KBF has said, he's single handedly destroying that place. The mods have a tough job but overall I think we behave ourselves most of the time. But I also think that most of us have strong personalities & we definetly want to be heard. Sometimes a little too loudly. ;)

This other forum in question, I was one of the first people there.  One of the top posters.  But they have one mod who is a devout homophobe and the administrator takes the stance that "we should respect each others' opinions" (same opinion of a couple of their posters too).  In most cases I would agree.  Being anti-gay, not a chance.  So I was deemed "disrespectful to the mods" because I wouldnt accept this guy's anti-gay rhetoric.

Then I started a thread about fighting in the NHL and while I made many great points, a few guys would come in with "But I like fighting ! YEah!" and derail it.  And somehow I became the "bitter" one.

Then while everyone was talking about how Kane is a cancer in the Jets' dressing room, I alluded to the "Concussion Rumour" from last season, which I even acknowledged probably wouldnt be allowed to remain up.  But instead of a "yeah dont post that" I get a message from the Admin burying me and telling me not to "test him".  So I replied saying hey take it easy man.  And got banned. lol

The best part was the people who had PM'ed me before the banning to say they posted less because the mods were over-moderating and the content of the board was becoming more and more idiotic.  So they ban a top poster.  Thats going to make their board a lot more active.

Oh well.  It will eventually dry up like OB did if they treat their posters that way.

I literally have not been on OB since I got the PM to come over here.

I stayed long enough to get banned for telling Colin why people left. Banned me then not long after that he made a post basically saying the same things I told him. Sad really that he was so touchy he couldn't take constructive criticism.

The dairy whip beside the marion has some killer french fries and decent burgers..

I grew up 4 blocks from the Dairy Whip.  What a great place.  Burgers are all right, fries are great, milk shakes are really good and the hot dogs with chilly on them are AWESOME!  That's my favourite hot dog EVER!

Good fatboys across the street from the Whip at Johnny's on Marion.  They have a really good flavoured patty.  And the burger is messy.  But I love messy burgers.

Dominos is absolutely awesome now. They changed a couple years back and it is far better now, one of my favourites.

My Dominos in the west end has a good pick-up special. $5 for a small 1-topping. Can't beat that and they throw in 2 packets of hot peppers to boot!

My dad told stories about him and his buddies riding their bikes all the way from North Kildonan to the Dairy Whip on Marion (he called it 'Mikes Dairy Whip', I suppose after the owner at the time?). I have to say they make a really good chili burger. I also recommend 'The Burger Place' at Portage and Rutland; get a double-deluxe with cheese and a poutine if you like fat-boy style burgers, long naps, and have little regard for your own well being.

A good long calorie burning, artery unclogging, nap - yep
