imo, the jets should make a captain change - little, wheeler or scheifele are good candidates. not sure about kane.

trade ladd, buff, pavelec, joiknen and setoguchi.

acquire a better goalie, a top 2 (or 3) centre should be on top of the list too.

I wouldn't have a problem taking the C off Ladd and putting it on Wheeler, Stuart or Schief (maybe Schief in 2 years)

Ladd is a superb 3rd line winger and could fill this role for most upper echelon NHL teams. He's not a 1st line winger to be sure and I see far too many small flaws in his game to be a 2nd line guy unless its for a dog team like Winnipeg, Floorda, Edmonton, Ottawa. He's far too cavalier with the puck, too many blind passes, etc. Also tends to wash off his back-check far too soon and let guys attack his net with little or no resistance.  Joker and Setoguchi are not tradeable as their contracts are up this year. Pavelec is a tough trade as most NHL GMs would laugh when they heard Chevy was trying to move him. For what? A box of tape! His contract is far too high to be a backup as its apparent he's never going to be an elite starter. Enstrom could probably be traded to a team like Detroit where their puck control game suits him and he wouldn't be required to do any physical work.

I'll echo the same statements about not wanting to trade Kane.  Mike nailed it when he said that the guy was rushed into the League by ATL.  This should really be his second season in the league, not his fifth.  He lacks a few things, wisdom and patience mainly, which hopefully will come with more time.  Kane's a good player. Raw, but good.

Money and career trajectory aside, my biggest issue with Kane is that he simply just doesn't think the game well.  He relies 100% on his speed and strength.  Sure he'll get to 30 goals again.  But he could be so much more.  A guy like him should be an ace on the power play, but he is terrible out there.  If he would just allow himself to be coached up a little bit, we might see him blossom into a true superstar.  Maybe some of it is on the coaches that he has had so far.  But when you see a guy firing bad angle shots indiscriminately, night after night, you realize that he probably has no interest in working on his mental game.  He just wants to get the puck and fire it on net... but that's only half the battle.  30 goals come from being physically dominant, but the next 30 come from being in the right spot at the right time, and he has seemingly made no progress in that regard since day one in the league.

Not everyone can be Steven Stamkos. 30 goal scorers in the NHL aren't all that common these days, Jets fans should be glad to have a guy like Kane. But I guess they can't over look the fact that he acts more like a football or basketball player. God forbid a hockey player shows any kind of personality.

Goaltending:

1. Good teams are winning championships without a lights out goal-tender.  Recently, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Detroit

2. A goal-tender capable to elevating a team with the Jets' talent level would be in NHL top 5

Crawford, Osgood and Fluery may not be hall-of-famers, but they all generally had at least league average save percentages. The fact is, save percentage doesn't change no matter who the team is in front of you.

A bad team allows more quality scoring chances, but they also allow more shots in general so it balances out. Save percentage is as close a measure to how good a goalie actually is as anything that exists. Pavelec has been WELL below average his entire career and that's not a coincidence at this point. Put a goalie like Fluery on this team (who I also don't think is more than an average goalie) and the Jets win at least five more games. Does that make the difference? Perhaps, perhaps not. What changes is that you would have a goalie that you could have some degree of confidence in that won't screw up and overplay every freaking shot.

The reason I would trade Kane isn't because he doesn't give it all every night. I fully appreciate his effort and it's the reason I respect him as a hockey player. I can also appreciate his "penalties of passion" because while stupid, at least he's making an effort. I'd rather he not go ballistic on the refs every time, but that's a miinor issue.

The problem I have is that he's really not a very good hockey player. Granted, he has all the talent in the world and I would miss his speed and aggression. I would NOT miss the pattern of speeding into the offensive zone going one-on-one, firing a shot that misses the net and repeating the process over and over and over. Yes, his linemates have sucked pretty much his entire Winnipeg career. I would be happy to give him and Scheifele an extended look together. It's just that I have been given absolutley no reason to believe that he will ever be an effective hockey player. He just doesn't make anyone around  him better in any capacity.

Still, if we're going to trade him it sure as hell better not be to the Islanders. Save for Tavares there is nothing on their roster or farm system I want. We better keep the hell away from Hamonic. They don't even have a pick this year.

I can think of several pieces I'd like from NYI

Okposo and/or Hamonic, for starters. de Haan, Strome, Pulock would all be nice.

Not necessarily saying I want a trade, just saying NYI has pieces I like.

I think Hamonic would have to be included in any big deal like the OP suggested. He's exactly what we need on this team.

I hate watching Hamonic play. But I respect it. He frustrates the hell out of me as a fan of the opposition.

If he was on the Jets? I'd love it.

It's too easy to paint everybody with the same brush like that. It's very frustrating to watch him take wrist shots from just inside the blue line on a nightly basis. He has the skill level to be one of the best in the NHL, but he's not close.

I'm not advocating to trade him just for the sake of trading him though. If we can't get a big haul, I wouldn't do it.

I'd strongly considering pulling the trigger on a Kane for Hamonic & Strome trade. I'm not sure the Islanders would do that though.

Kane will get better as this team improves.  He hasn't even come close to his ceiling.

Kane will ONLY get moved at the deadline if it's an absolute slam dunk of a trade that Chevy would be forced to take.  I.E. Hamonic and Okposo or something.

Disagree with the last line.

James Wright is useless. I'm sorry. We can find energy guys who compete nightly who also have a single ounce of offensive ability. Wright has none.

I wouldnt say he has zero offensive ability.  He has 10% terrible puck luck and 90% zero finish.  But he's a good guy to work hard, hustle, get into the corners and get the puck out, hopefully to someone else.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of guys out there that do what he does but also know how to finish.  I like Wright's motor and I like his desire...but he's just not one of those guys that gets you to the tournament at the end of the season.

Yup, give us Okposo, Strome and the 1st round pick and they can have Kane & Buff.

Every goal scorer does that though. You can't score a goal if you don't put the puck on net and unless you expect guys to carry a huge shooting percentage like Stamkos not every shot is going to score. Like I said, guys who score 30 goals in the NHL are not that common and Kane is one of them at a young age. Be satisfied with what he is and don't expect him to be a super star.

You're making it too black-and-white, as usual.  Kane is particularly bad for this.  With his natural talent, if he would simply put a little effort into learning the game and beating guys with his mind rather than just his body, he COULD be a superstar.  That's what's so frustrating.  Brett Hull used to say he was a good goal-scorer until he took the time to really understand the game... and that's when he became a GREAT goal scorer.  No one is denying that Kane is a useful player and certainly one of the most dangerous offensive threats on the Jets.  It's just that he could be so much more.

Enough with the "Jets fans should just be grateful for what they have" mentality.  What a loser way of thinking.  Come down from your ivory tower in Calgary and realize that Jets fans are just like any other fans, they want their players to perform to their maximum potential.

AKA Chip (wanted to quote your post but it's not working)

I agree with you, but I don't think a guy like Fleury would be enough of a difference maker in Winnipeg. In fact I see him and Pav as being quite similar in performance and consistency.

30 goal scorers are more than just useful players, they are very good players. Very few people get to the level you are describing, expecting everyone to get there is only setting yourself up for disappointment. If you keep focussing on what could be you are always going to be unhappy. Trust me I've seen it plenty from fans of every team. The sooner you set realistic expectations the less you'll worry about guys not living up to the absolute maximum potential.

Kane is over rated , 5 years in and he still can't make a pass... The high goals is mainly is result of him shooting non stop.

If the team can get someone with talent for him then they should. Frolik

is outplaying him and making a fraction of his salary.

You sound like the people who complain that Ovechkin only scores because he takes a lot of shots.

I wish I could agree with anything you said here. His "terrible puck luck" has pretty much everything to do with the fact that he has no ability whatsoever. Horrible shot, stone hands and no offensive instincts to speak of. He's an alright PK'er and decent defensively but I am beyond tired of people assuming that 4th liners are "good defensively" because they are bad offensively. I mean, they have to be good at something, right?

In James Wright's case, I'm not asking for much offense from a 4th line defensive specialist in the mould of old school Manny Malholtra. James Wright is legitimately just a roster spot.
