Mike Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 Officially ratified. Will update with details as they roll in No more 9-game injured list. 6-game injured list now. 44 man active roster, 2 man reserve (instead of 42/4) Practice roster expanded from 7 to 10 (12 to 15 in fall) NO MORE NON IMPORTS AND IMPORTS They are now known as "nationals and internationals"
Mike Posted June 13, 2014 Author Report Posted June 13, 2014 oh wow. From now on, all you have to do to be a "national" (non-import) is be a Canadian citizen at the time of your first contract signing. That changes A LOT. Floyd 1

iso_55 Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 Wow, to almost strike over terms like nationals & internationals. Floyd 1
Mr Dee Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 Great, now when I bring something into the Country, I have to International it? What does that do for the word important?

That changes A LOT Not all that knowledgeable about the process but generally doesn't it take quite awhile to get Canadian citizenship, like at least a few years? A lot of these players who come up here from the U.S. might be out of the league by the time they get their Canadian citizenship.

From now on, all you have to do to be a "national" (non-import) is be a Canadian citizen at the time of your first contract signing. That changes A LOT. I'm not sure how that changes that much. Guys from the states aren't going to come up and get Canadian citizenship in time to get a contract in place. You would still need to be a Canadian Citizen long before you ever get a football contract. It's not like they can come get one and then the next day sign a CFL contract and be a national player.

A lot of these players who come up here from the U.S. might be out of the league by the time they get their Canadian citizenship. It's not about getting Americans who come up here to play pro ball granted "national" status. It's about getting the status granted for Americans who come up here to play CIS ball (or NCAA via Simon Fraser) I'm not sure how feasible it will be though. The rule is 1095 days in a 4 year span. So complete your degree, graduate as a senior, hit the CFL. Good for future guys who fit the mold of guys like Doc Cassama, Akiem Hicks, etc.
Mike Posted June 13, 2014 Author Report Posted June 13, 2014 As an example ... Simon Fraser currently has 24 Americans on their spring roster. That's potentially 24 more "nationals" being added to the talent pool. From one school. Probably the school with the largest sample, but other big schools will have a handful here and there as well.
Mike Posted June 13, 2014 Author Report Posted June 13, 2014 Here's another example ... a guy like David Scott from UBC. 5th year upcoming as a receiver for the school, born in Texas. He's probably eligible now, provided that he can successfully pass the citizenship test. That's one fairly decent prospect added already, without even looking much into it. Same with a guy like Travoy Martinez from Saskatchewan.
Fred C Dobbs Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 Officially ratified. Will update with details as they roll in It will be very interesting to see exactly how they've done away with the elimination of the option year for veterans. I would be surprised if they made it retroactive to contracts signed this year. But if they did, that means that come next Feb 15th there's going to be a boatload of free agents hitting the market. Just in time for our Grey Cup run .
mbrg Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 Does this eliminate all of the paperwork some guys have to dig up to become draft eligible? If they have ever been a Canadian citizen growing up and have not changed or renounced citizenship, they would automatically be what we will probably still call a non-import.

It definitely helps. They don't appear to have taken away any eligibility options (anyone who once was still would be) but they've made it easier to determine in some cases and added different possibilities on how one could be eligible.

Using this as part of an evil mastermind plan - moving Adrian Peterson up here, having him live here for a few years and apply for citizenship, all while NOT playing football, only to sign a contract with the Bombers once it's all happened just to skirt around the ratio rules - that's probably never going to happen. Not an absolute certainty though, once Tillman gets to run a team again the chances increase. There are other implications though.
The Unknown Poster Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 With the 6 game injured list, does that mean you can pull off three guys per season rather than one in the first 9 games and one in the second? Or do I totally not understand how the injured list works?
road griller Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 Does marriage help speed up the process? I am sure there are enough single guys on here to marry up an o-line and a few extra to cover injuries ASAP.
Floyd Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 I wonder if the CFL qualifies for the 'temporary foreign worker' program. Could open up a whole new talent pool.
Atomic Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 Does marriage help speed up the process? I am sure there are enough single guys on here to marry up an o-line and a few extra to cover injuries ASAP. Could definitely see this kind of thing going on in Saskatchewan
Atomic Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 Wasn't there talk of adding another DI? Yes, that is included in the extra 2 roster players.

Could definitely see this kind of thing going on in Saskatchewan Well I lived there and they don't take kindly to people who marry outside the family. I guess there could be enough American brothers and cousins and such but that adds an extra hurdle us Manitobans don't have. Atomic and Floyd 2
Bomber_fanaddict Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 Sask players (labatte, Foley and Durant) still whining about the deal and want the execs that they helped bring in to resign. How about stop whining and play some football. http://980.greenzonefootball.com/story/rider-vets-calling-change-atop-cflpa/367187

Or do I totally not understand how the injured list works? After 6 games the person comes off the 6 game injured list and his salary now counts against the cap unless he gets put back onto the 6 game list. Probably still the same number of people that you can pull pre-emptively off the list per season, just now if you get injured for 5 weeks you don't get screwed by being on the 9 game injured list and miss out on 4 weeks of football where you are healthy but not worth using the preemptive removal for.
gbill2004 Posted June 13, 2014 Report Posted June 13, 2014 @BobIrvingCJOB: CFL wants us to call Canadian players Nationals and Imports Internationals--I am not opposed to change but good luck with that!!
