gbill2004 Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 A pro football league slated to start play this fall reportedly aims to eventually become a feeder system for the NFL. The Fall Experimental Football League (FXFL) will have six teams, including clubs in the Boston and New York metropolitan areas, when its six-game season kicks off in October, according to The Associated Press. Players will be paid $1,000 per week, per the AP. FXFL commissioner Brian Woods told the AP that the league’s “long-term goal is to establish a partnership with the NFL, and we feel can do that on many platforms.” Woods told the AP that the FXFL can fill a void by grooming young talent that isn’t quite ready for the NFL or is completely off the NFL’s radar. According to the AP, the league is slated to play a good number of Wednesday night games. This seems a logical part of the calendar for FXFL to try, with Sunday and Monday belonging to the NFL, Saturday the property of college football and Thursday having NFL and college football action. The question then turns to the type of talent the FXFL can attract as it starts play. The Canadian Football League and Arena Football League both have footholds as NFL alternatives. Moreover, though the NFL only has a seven-round draft, hundreds of undrafted free agents are signed by clubs in the spring. Also, with practice squads, the NFL already has an in-house developmental system. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/06/20/report-fxfl-wants-to-establish-a-partnership-with-the-nfl/.
Mike Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 I can't possibly see how this fails. Floyd and BBlink 2
17to85 Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 I just don't understand how minor league football leagues don't take hold... Hockey and baseball can both make a go of it why not football?
bluto Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 experimental? how? are they going to wear scuba gear? is there going to be a rollergames-style wall of death in front of the goal line? johnzo and Dascow 2
JuranBoldenRules Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 I just don't understand how minor league football leagues don't take hold... Hockey and baseball can both make a go of it why not football? If it were affiliated with the NFL and they were willing to take a big loss for several years but help them find good venues and put the games on television it would have a shot. The problem is that the minor league for football and basketball in the US is the NCAA, and nothing can ever really compete. In both sports there have been loads of minor leagues and teams come and go with none really having any longevity, other than arena football. iso_55 1
Atomic Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 What a stupid name. I'm sure it will fail like all the others.
Floyd Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 They should have, like, side stories where they cut to the cheerleader when her football boyfriend gets tackled or league champions should all get 'intercontinental championship belts'.
The Unknown Poster Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 Hey the XFL was revolutionary in many ways. The anti-wwe media turned on it hard.
Brandon Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 The xfl had some good ideas... Some awful ones also.
Atomic Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 Hey the XFL was revolutionary in many ways. The anti-wwe media turned on it hard. Yes. That's why it failed. The anti-WWE media. Not because everyone who heard about it thought it was totally ridiculous.
holoman Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 The xfl had some good ideas... Some awful ones also. It really did. But having their announcers feud WWE style wasn't one of them
iso_55 Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 The last football minor league I know of that had success for awhile was the Continental Football League in the late 60's. It was around for awhile but not sure how long. The CFL picked its bones when it died with coaches like Leo Cahill & players like quarterbacks Tom Wilkinson & Don Jonas coming into our league. I'm sure there were a lot more I wasn't aware of.
