James Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 That's just an ignorant comment. Comparing apples to oranges. Surprised someone with your knowledge would make that comment. I love Woods, but the smaller rosters in the CFL sometimes make getting guys like him on the roster. Special teams specialists. All apples. Woods is a receiver too. Have we used any DI's on offence? Didn't see Cotton out there last night. Is Unamba playing defense anymore? He was terrible in the first two games when he saw some snaps. He's basically a specialist now too. There are 4 DI's. A guy who does all returns should be pretty easy to fit on the roster, especially if special teams are a priority, which they should be. First and foremost, we need somebody who is going to make positive plays for us, first step in that regard is to secure the ball. It's too important to play around with. Calling Woods a one-trick pony was ignorant, completely disregarding the importance of special teams. Especially ignorant the day after a 1 point game in which 6 opposition points (which could have pretty easily been 14 given where the drives started) came directly as a result of flubbed punt returns. Woods is a terrible receiver... Unamba is an American who's only good at special teams coverage, which is more of an example of why we should get him off the roster. Stoudermire is a good returner, and is capable of filling in for Unamba as well as being a back up DB. Why would we need to back up receiver with a DI when we have good Canadian receivers? We have zero good Canadian RB's and frankly, Cotton looked a hell of a lot better than Woods on KR's anyway. Why waste a DI spot on woods when we can have just as good returning and add better depth to the roster as well? You obviously weren't at training camp and have no idea what you're talking about in relation to Woods! He caught everything thrown to him in TC! What an ignorant comment! Because catching passes in practice against a bunch of DBS who aren't even in the league is just a phenomenal accomplishment. And he was also far from consistent from what I heard correctly.. Were you at every single practice? I was at most and you obviously weren't at any! Trying to defend your ignorant statement with hearsay has no value! I don't even feel I need to defend it because I see it as total truth. You really think woods would be of any use to us at receiver in a real game against starting caliber defensive backs in this league? Just because he caught a few balls against some no name DBS that I can't even remember there names in PRACTICE, does not mean he is a good receiver... Sorry to burst your bubble

Mike Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 I wonder if people would be more into the idea of putting Woods back on if we had lost last night. Blue-urns 1

Let me know when we have just as good returning with someone else. Haven't seen it yet. Cotton and Ford can't handle punts. Washington can catch punts sometimes, careless with the ball. Stoudermire wasn't a punt returner in college. Can he catch punts? Catching punts is a skill in itself. We can't have two turnovers a game just so we have a guy who can stand on the sidelines and wait for someone to get hurt to play O or D. If Grigsby gets hurt first quarter, our offence will be screwed if we don't have a decent back up.... Would be a good way to get Willy hurt with the opposing defence teeing off on himDI'ing Woods just to catch punts seems like a waste. We really should see if Stoudermire can do it first. (Doesn't have to be in a game) Washington and Cotton are both better at returning kick offs Seems like a waste? If Drew Willy doesn't lead a last minute touchdown drive last night we basically lose a game because we couldn't catch punts. Come on man. The point isn't just in front of you, it's kicking you in the face. Everyone agrees it was a mistake to have Washington doing the punt returning. What I disagree with is taking Cotton off the roster before seeing if Stoudermire or Cotton can do punt returns I think we saw pretty clearly that Cotton can't do it in the pre-season. He didn't even try to catch the punts when he got a chance. I want him on the roster, I'd keep him on at Grigsby's expense, but if they aren't going to use Cotton at all on offense as a DI, he doesn't bring a lot of value, through no fault of his own. Unamba's role should be filled by a NI.
Mike Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 I feel like Unamba would be a non factor if Graig Newman had two working legs right now. I like him, but he should be replaceable. He needs more time to acclimate to the CFL.

He's clueless on D.

No one behind him at RB, and Grigsbys been pretty awesome, so I don't necessarily want Cotton being the starter anyway. Grigsby's pass pro was awesome last night, and he is a hell of a receiver out of the backfield. If we had a good Canadian RB, I'd be all for getting Woods on the roster
James Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 I wonder if Grigsby can catch punts well? Never thought of that possibility... Regardless, I'd have a try out for punt returns this week, and if no one showed they could be reliable, then it would be time to put woods back on the roster.... Should have signed Messam:p (yeah I went there )
SmokinBlue Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 Agreed. Demond needs to learn to hold on to that ball. When he does he can be pretty threatening. But last night, he'd catch the ball and stand there for a split second like a deer in headlights, or run backwards...or just drop the ball. Put Woods back in along with Cottonball. Umm, no.
SmokinBlue Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 We benched Woods for no reason - he hadn't dropped anything, Washington had one great return and everyone (including the CFL) fell back in love with him... Rookie coaching mistake - put Woods back in, stop 'tinkering'... no big deal Classic bomber fans - we're all swooning for backups/prospects... Cotton, Goossen, Stoudemire, Peach, etc etc Washington has had way more than 1 great return, he has hardly returned at all in the past and has what, 4 TDs returning? It'd would have been idiotic to at least not try to find out what he can do as a full time returner. Now we know he drops too many balls, so we can put him back to the occasional return. and I doubt Grigsby would be a very good punt returner. If Drew Willy doesn't lead a last minute touchdown drive last night we basically lose a game because we couldn't catch punts. The catching punts thing didn't help, but we were also struggling to do anything offensively for the majority of the 2nd half, probably had a lot to do with Aaron Kelly playing injured. We were just lucky to find a way to get a few big plays off. The struggles offensively against a very good defense were more of a factor of Montreal staying in the game then 2 plays. Still impressed with the offense though, good hard fought win with a banged up o-line and receiving corps.

Washington's ball security issues have been known since his rookie season. There was a reason why Jovon Johnson was returning punts and he wasn't. blitzmore 1
James Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 Re: Grigsby punt returning, I'm just trying to be constructive and think of ideas... Another scenario, just put woods on for Unamba, and if a DB gets hurt, Wild takes over for Dunn, Dunn plays DB, Kromah plays Mac Or a Dunn plays SAM, and Sears plays DB... That way we have Woods reliable, and good punt returning, and Cottons KR and two great RB's on the roster
SmokinBlue Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 Even with the 2 drops last night, he's still done more good for our team returning than he has bad. I dunno, I just hate watching boring returners. As evidenced by Keith Stokes still being one of my favorite returners, but his ball security was horrible.
pigseye Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 I thought Sears had a rough game at safety, hope Legget gets healthy real soon. Kuale and Sherman were by far our worst LB'ers.

I hate his hesitant pause after he catches the ball... It doesn't seem like much time, but when you have professional football players running at full speed that one second is a lot more ground covered than you think. However, both Washington and cotton are better kick returners
pigseye Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 Doesn't seem to matter who sits and who plays does it.....the results have been the same a W and that's all that matters. Later in the season when the injuries pile up this will pay dividends.

I think one of the reasons(aside from hsi speed and instincts) he breaks returns more often then then the rest of our returners is he hesitates the least when he is catching the ball, however this is also one of the reasons he drops it so much. He tries to time everything so perfectly all the time in order to hit the big return, but in doing so it's a lot harder to consistently catch the ball and not lose it. Just too bad he struggles to catch the ball and hold onto it, otherwise he'd be a pretty amazing returner, he struggles in the same area as a DB, so many times he should have had interceptions that he's just flat out dropped.
Goalie Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 On the one fumble by Demond last night, whyte really nailed that punt and demond had to back up to catch it, kind of tripped on his own feet really so pretty hard to say he dropped that one, suppose technically he did but... he tripped backing up so that one i can let slide, the other? i dunno, sometimes you just gotta give the other team props.. it's not like demond flat out dropped the ball, he tripped trying to catch the first one and the second one got stripped... It is what it is. Personally, I don't think i can be too angry at the guy considering he basically won the game for us last week and was named special teams player of the week also. I'd let woods return punts though, he's consistent at least. Demond? i'd give him another chance down the line, i just wouldn't have him being our dedicated returner, he's too valuable of an asset on D to have him back returning all the punts.
Mr. Perfect Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 The first was a difficult play, no doubt about it. That being said a drop is a drop. I feel with great confidence that is a play Aaron Woods would have made. Blue-urns, blitzmore and iso_55 3

I dunno, I just hate watching boring returners. As evidenced by Keith Stokes still being one of my favorite returners, but his ball security was horrible. It's great to have exciting punt returns now and again but the point of the game is to win. Washington's mistakes made this a much closer contest than it needed to be. Ball security is the first priority with punt returners, accumulating yards the second. If the offence is moving the ball effectively it doesn't matter much where they start on the field excluding being pinned on their goal line. It's the offences job to advance the ball down field and if they can't do that and have to rely on great punt returns for good field position chances are they are going to lose the game. The defencive side of special teams is in reality much more important for maintaining field position with good punt placement and containment. blitzmore, iso_55 and Mark H. 3
do or die Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 Well, color me impressed.....Willy took 3 big shots on that final drive, didn't flinch one iota....and won us that game.
Tracker Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 Willy's toughness won the game, but I can't help thinking that we were very fortunate to have won, and won in such a dramatic fashion. We made more than enough mistakes to lose, but Montreal couldn't take advantage of them. Against Edmonton, whom we have a good chance of beating, we cannot count on being as lucky. The two teams look to be so evenly matched that mistakes will likely decide the game. Atomic 1
iso_55 Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 Let's hope that Mr Hyde plays receiver for them on Thursday. With Adarius Bowman you just never know what you're going to get. He's priority #1 to stop on defense for us.

We made three bad turnovers but they made two worse turnovers. We took advantage of those mistakes.
iso_55 Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 I had a coach who used to say (and I never forgot) that in every game, five plays decide an outcome. The team that makes those 5 plays wins. I think there's a lot of truth to that.
