Clarky Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 Mike Riley did a great job of rushing today but he really pushes the envelope. I believe it was the first half and he did a first down run and dove forward and the bomber player held up to avoid contacting him. By avoiding him he actually didn't touch him and Riley got up and ran another 7 yards. That play was bogus in my mind as players can't touch a QB especially when he dives. He should of been marked down when he dove. Minor play and didn't outcome game greatly but if the next time he did that and the Bomber player didn't hold up it probably would of been a 15 yarder. Mike Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 Apparently the "rule" is that he didn't give himself up because he didn't slide feet first. I don't know how it's written, but to me a slide is a slide and I guarantee you if someone had buried him, it would've been a 15. Definitely not the stupidest call by an official tonight though, which belonged to the guy who flagged Washington for belting Stamps in the end zone. Flag the play, not the result. Thought Odell Willis got tagged for one lame one too on Drew Willy. You can't hit a guy low, that doesn't mean you can't pull him down by his leg. James and TrueBlue 2
Mr Dee Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 That flag on Willis for the low hit wins the ridiculous call of the year so far. SPuDS 1
pigseye Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 Mike Reilly was head and shoulders the best player on the field tonight. Teams are going to have to spy him with a top notch MLB to control him, which leaves us out of that picture.
SPuDS Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 Tackletackletackletackletackle!!!! , Jesus Christ that was horrific.. Wrap him up and he gets like half of his hundred.. BomberFan and Westy Sucks 2
iso_55 Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 He's going to get lit up. Not every team is going to let him run like that.
Atomic Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 Mike Reilly is one tough, greasy sonofabitch. He is a great QB. Not a pure passer by any means, but good enough to win a lot of games. MOBomberFan 1
Jpan85 Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 He escaped pressure so much due to the rules you can't slide down and wrap his legs up. It sucks but it's the reality in today's game.
Blueandgold Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 I don't blame the rules for our inability to tackle. Guys need to form tackle instead of going for the big hit. BomberFan and Blue-urns 2
Fatty Liver Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 That flag on Willis for the low hit wins the ridiculous call of the year so far. Turner was penalized for an equally ridiculous roughing the passer call. Tracker, blitzmore and Mr. Perfect 3

Reilly is a good qb. I wouldn't put him in an elite status yet. he is benefitting from being a starter from last season with his experience. I'm excited for Drew Willy as to where he'll be this time next year. Should be good. This season, I expect the ups & downs of a rookie starting qb. Just as long as the overall curve for growth is maintained over time. Mr Dee and blitzmore 2

If a qb does this then he should be open for a shot next time. This may be bantam & the kids 15 but they still hit. We had a qb who liked to dangle defensive players on the sidelines. As in, run as far as he could downfield, then cut to the sidelines, pretend he was going out of bounds & as the defensive players were letting up suddenly cut back in a foot in front of the sideline marker & pick up more yards. We coaches warned him not to keep doing it as he was going to get hurt but he didn't listen. He thought it was funny. One game, he takes off, cuts towards the sidelines & then as he was going out of bounds cut back in & a linebacker from the other team just destroyed him. He went one way, the ball the other. The kid lay on the ground moaning & crying & I didn't feel sorry for him as he was warned not to do it. The other team watches video, too. If Mike Reilly thinks the other team is going to lay off if he does that because of the rules, he's in for a rude awakening.
James Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 If I were to pick 2 tings that absolutely killed us last night, It's horrid Offensive line play, and piss poor tackling.... You gotta wrap up a QB like Reily... no excuses BomberFan and Westy Sucks 2
Bomber Diehard Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 I wonder if they will change their MLB?
mbrg Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 Trying to get a kill shot in on any player, QB or not, when they are already lying on the ground will almost always be a 15 yard penalty. Having to tag a player dead when they are down isn't a new rule. The defence had a brainfart. If I were to pick 2 tings that absolutely killed us last night, It's horrid Offensive line play, and piss poor tackling.... You gotta wrap up a QB like Reily... no excuses A lot of poor fundamentals. First offensive play of the game for the Bombers, Grigsby bobbled the pass on a fairly simple and typically unremarkable play, Willis had 6 the other way. That was the play call equivalent of dipping your toes in the water and they messed it up. 4 times (5?) they put the ball on the ground on kick & punt returns, thankfully recovering them all. So Feoli-G does punts the rest of the game just to make sure we have some ball security. Ball security is good, but now we've also guaranteed every return will be 4 yards. And of course the terrible tackling. It all had a 3 hour long ripple effect. The sad thing about the terrible tackling - other than it was terrible tackling which is always sad - was I thought Etch called a fantastic game. Edmonton owned the ball in the first half, yet by the end of it (or close to) I noticed they had only completed 2 passes to receivers. Reilly had to check down on almost every play and was under constant pressure. Their offence had the ball for about 23 minutes in the first half and scored 6 points. And yet I can't say the players had a great game. Wrap up the ball carrier. Use your arms. Football fundamentals. Randle thinking he's Sears and trying to body check down Calvin McCarthy. Not going to happen, he's a pretty thick player and Randle is not. Hit the middle of the body, wrap your arms around the trunk and tighten as you slide down the legs. Almost everything last night was just a little off. The passes were off, the timing was off, the tackling was off, the Oline was off(ful). Time to shake it off. The Bombers have never had the most talented 46 in the league but they have been playing at a very high level and as a team. If they can get back to believing in themselves as a team and all pull in the same direction, wins will come. Players getting healthy soon would sure help. Boy oh boy do we miss Greaves. iso_55, bigg jay, BomberFan and 1 other 4

I think I was more mad about this than almost anything else I saw last night. If anyone had done more than touch him they would have been flagged for 15 yards yet if they let up on him he can get up and keep going? He gave himself up to avoid contact, feet first or sideways it's the same thing. Blue-urns 1

It was clear that Reillys intention was to give himself up, that should be blown dead.He didn't dive forward, he fell sideways as if to slide. Refs missed that one. If they're going to err on the side of throwing flags for minor stuff that could be roughing they better err on the side of qbs giving themselves up as well otherwise you're just inviting players to start hitting qbs when they slide. TBURGESS Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 Reilly didn't hook slide so the defense had to touch him to be down by contact. The defense made a mistake. Reilly took advantage of it. It's as simple as that.
Goalie Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 Was at the game and was kind of confused at times wondering what was a penalty and what wasn't. I don't really get how the offensive player(white i believe, the esks rb) can lead with his head and not get a penalty but last game we got a defensive call against us for basically leading with the head too. That and the roughing the passer calls are just mind boggling at times, really makes you wonder, went both way toos, some really weird calls against both teams, thought the demond hit on stamps was good and didn't think there needed to be a call on it, stamps was allowed back in the game too so really, how hurt could he have been, yeah he was carted off after but they let him back in a couple times... no flag until stamps starting rolling around on the ground, BS in my opinion. Also the fumble by bowman, thought it was indeed a fumble, but guess not.. Refs do seem to be very flag happy for both teams. Does slow the game down a tad though.

It's as simple as that. Sorry but it's really not as simple as that at all... You know for a fact if a bomber hit him while he was down, it would have been a flag so really.. whats the bombers to do in that situation? Again sorry i've read some of your posts and i'm not sure how you can say some of the stuff you have been saying, for example saw you say willy didn't throw the ball enough, you weren't at the game so... how do you know who was open and who wasn't? Cuz i was and i'll give you a hint, the reason he held on to the ball and "looked like the rookie qb he was" was because NOBODY was open and when they were? He'd hit them and drop it, saw you call the JFG throw in the first an overthrow? Funny happened right in front of me at the game and JFG stopped running and got turned around, if he kept running ,touchdown easily cuz the nearest esk was 2 sections away. Anyway though, really not as simple as you think it is.
Jpan85 Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 I have basically come to accept that any contact no matter how slight and non consequential below the quarterbacks knees (or some times higher) and above the shoulders will be 15 yards.

Starting to come around but... as i said in another post, does seem a little confusing at times, is that a call? isn't it? I'm not 100 percent sure all the time and i should be. Hey man, you did the flag raising the first game right? what's the deal with it? cuz last night they only got it half way too.. Is that as far as it can go??
Jpan85 Posted July 18, 2014 Report Posted July 18, 2014 No if it's windy like it was last night the rope gets pulled over in between the upper pully and the bracket keeping from falling to the ground. Thus the rope gets stuck and you can't pull it up any further.

Anyway though, really not as simple as you think it is. You don't hit a guy on the ground. You just touch him down. That's what you do in the situation. Everyone on the field and most fans know that. I didn't say that Willy didn't throw the ball enough. I said he didn't throw the ball well well enough. The JFG throw was on the wrong side of the receivers body. Thats why he tried to turn around to get it. Probably why it looked like he slowed down too. A better throw is probably a TD.

It's as simple as that. he didn't hook slide but only because he was a bit off balance... he kind of fell sideways, but he was clearly trying his best to slide and give himself up.
