Why they didn't find a location and go the route BC did is beyond me.  Build a temp 25K seat stadium and run with that till your new digs are ready.

Because most other provinces/cities don't have the cash to do that plan. I agree the BC Plan worked awesome but it also cost a buttload more money than either Winnipeg or Hamilton spent/are spending.

weren't most the stands/seats left over from the winter olympics also? That played a role, also winnipeg had a stadium to play at so winnipeg is kind of irrelevant here.

I don't know, all I know is that the government here spent $500 million on the stadium upgrade, with nary a comment or complaint from anyone, or even any discussion. It just "happened". A few socialists complained after the fact, but it never even was mentioned during the election last year. Imagine if the Manitoba government just decided to spend $500 million on a new arena for the Jets? Every old crank and nut in Winnipeg would be crying the blues and the issue would be debated endlessly. Here, no one even batted an eye.

Actually no.  At the time people thought that was going to be the case but in fact it was not.  The seats were all new for this temp stadium.

Caretaker Bob wouldn't spend his money for that. All talk. No action.

Was any Olympic money used for the project?

In Calgary, they just opened the west leg of the LRT (Light Rail Transit) & spent $2 billion. Same thing. The City said it was building the line in 2007, got the funding from the other levels of government  & in December 2013 the line opened. Like nary a complaint as well other than a few homeowners wanting more for their expropriated homes that went to court. No bitching or opposition from dissenters on Calgary City Council, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, Alberta Taxpayers Federation or community groups about it. Seems the bigger the city, the easier it is to spend the cash.

Once you've hosted an Olympics you've set the bar pretty high for "wasting money on sports". It's hard to shock anybody after that.

Not that I don't love the Olympics.

Spending money to improve an inadequate public transportation system is always going to get less scrutiny than spending money on stadiums and arenas, case in point: look at the nonstop *****-fest that went on in Edmonton when Katz was trying to get a new arena built.

Because I believe it was the President or CEO that said that they would be done in time unlike Winnipeg who couldn't. That they "learned" from the mistakes in Manitoba and they would be different. On time and on budget. I remember the press conference clearly because I knew right then and there before they even bulldozed that they were going to be screwed by mouthing off in the media. Man, I wish I could find video proof of this press conference. I keep looking but to no avail.
