I've found it odd how polarizing Renaud has been among fans.  He's a reasonably solid but unspectacular punter.  We've had far far worse - I know, high praise.

It's because after Bob Cameron and Jon Ryan Bomber fans have unrealistically high expectations from the punter position. Same with running back, every back since Charles Roberts has had various people bitching that they're not good enough because Charlie was better.

Well, I say let Renaud back in. As one poster put it, though not as consistent as he should be -  Renaud is a better directional kicker. He is a punting 'specialist' - which is why he should be better than Lirim but he's not. I say Renaud though cause I'd like to see Lirim not get hurt - and I have visions of someone breaking thru again, missing the ball, and taking Lirum out at the knee ending his season. I'd rather have Renaud back there to take that hit.

If you want to win, you play the best player you can at every position.

Lirim is a better punter.

It is rare a punter gets hurt on blocked punt. So rare it is not worth putting in an inferior kicker and taking away the extra roster flexibility.

Renaud: 3 games, 19 punts, 812 yards, 42.7 avg

Lirim: 9 games, 65 punts, 2877 yards, 44.2 avg

Their gross averages aren't nearly as important as their net averages.

If Renaud places the ball better, coverage teams will be more effective and his net average may very well be longer.

I could be wrong but I think every team has a punter with a higher net yards than lirim

The difference between the two is marginal. Not enough to win or lose a game IMO - but if Lirim gets hurt - who kicks that 45 yard field goal to win a game, hmmmm?

Hardly marginal. Renaud shanks way more punts than Lirim, it's not even close. Furthermore, regarding your 45 yard field goal point, Renaud can't kick field goals, or kick off to save his life. If you recall back to the game we were suppose to dress Louie Sakoda in 2010, and he couldn't go because he hid is injury from coaches, Renaud was forced to do kickoffs and field goals. It was an embarrassment.

Almost feels like they felt they got burned by letting Ford go and thought it would be best to keep Renaud around. I don't see the point unless its a ratio thing.

Doh'k ...

Renaud's net is 34.9, so 0.4 higher. Minimal, but of course only a 3-game sample. Last year he was at 35.7 (with our dismal special teams) and his first 3 years he was over 36.

I say let him get back into the game, and should he prove no better than Lirim through the remainder of the season, he'll be looking for work (or concentrating on renovations) after November.

If renaud could do more than punting, he'd probably have no reason to worry about his job but because he can't and it's been said multiple times now by several posters including using examples that he can't and he's only, strictly, all he does is PUNT, He will be hard pressed to get back in to a game this year. I'm under the impression he's healthy and Lirim is just better plus the extra special teams player not being wasted on a one dimensional punter, If Lirim got hurt in a game and  Renaud was also dressed, i highly doubt he'd do anything other than punt the ball, all this leads me to believe that he's gone in the off-season, possibly retirement. Has had a good career but his time is probably just about done. Do people forget that game where Sakoda was supposed to be our kicker and couldnt play and they had to go with  Renaud, man oh man, that was a gong show, i'm not even sure he kicked an extra point in that game. With all that being said, I thought Renaud was fine, but... a little too inconsistent in his bomber career, big boomers followed by huge shanks at the worst times possible, I don't hate the guy, he's had a good career, just I feel his time is up, If you have a guy that can do all 3 and a guy that can only do 1, The writing is on the wall for Renaud for sure. He's had a good career, not bad for a guy who can only exclusively punt and do nothing else. Pretty rare these days for a one dimensional kicker to last as long as renaud has actually.

If Lirim gets injured in a game Kyle Jones is the backup kicker.

for place kicking and punting? ouch! That of course is providing they dump Renaud.

Yes kicking and punting.

And it's not "providing they dump Renaud". If Renaud isn't on the active roster, he can't just come into the game if Lirim gets injured in game.

Exactly. He lost the job for the 2nd half to a backup linebacker.

Wow...you mean if a guy is not on the active roster...they can't go and get him at the restaurant down the street and put him into the game? Talk about stating the obvious! All I said was we're in trouble if we had to rely on Kyle Jones to be our 3 way kicker.

No you said "provided they dump Renaud".

Before people kick Renaud to the curb it might be wise to know who the next guy up is if Lirim were to get hurt. We have already demonstrated how lack of quality depth on the O line has been a serious issue, let's not do the same in the ST area, that is a huge factor in field position.

Next guy up would have to be a new American find. Renaud can't placekick to save his life so he's no help anywhere but punting.

This is the point that many seem to be missing.  Renaud isn't really a backup for Hajrullahu.

Renaud will be here until the end of the season, but his career as a regular CFL punter is probably over.

I remember - I didn't say "renaud' to kick field goals. I said Renaud to PUNT so that way if someone breaks through it's not Lirim's leg that gets broken. My question still stands, leave Lirim in to punt - WHO kicks that 45 yard field goal to win the game if he gets hurt? My point is we don't have anyone and I'm sorry but if the bombers lose a game to ONE or even TWO shanked punts, they don't deserve to win that game. That's my what I'm saying - the difference between the two in a punting game is 'marginal'.
