Tracker Posted November 16, 2014 Report Posted November 16, 2014 Because next season the Bombers are going to still be looking at 2 americans 3 canadians on the offensive line, for that group to get better it's primarily the americans who need to be better. So take the best NI in the draft so we can get another starter somewhere. Hell if we're picking by need for NIs I say we need a defensive lineman more than we need an offensive lineman given the current configuration of the team and where NIs play. If we get our two wayward NI draft picks who are pining away down south to come home, everything changes
iso_55 Posted November 16, 2014 Report Posted November 16, 2014 The age old debate... Should a team draft based on ability as in best player available or need? I always say need as we have to build a foundation first. Until we get our OL right this team is going nowhere. A receiver can't catch the football if his qb is on his back constantly. Our need is clearly OL & that supercedes drafting someone purely on ability. I don't like it as we still need skilled Canadian players but that's the way it is. should you not build a base by taking the most talent and then building around them? If for example this team uses 3 NIs at receiver then we can play 3 americans on the OL quite easily. This idea that you MUST have 4 or 5 canadians on the OL is outdated thinking and needs to end. Sorry, disagree. We need a great OL to win. We have to make good picks when we do.

They would definitely help us catch up with the rest of the league but still lots of work to be done.
JuranBoldenRules Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 If/when we get to the point where we have 7 good NI starters, then we can afford to take the best player. Until then put me on the best O lineman, not best player side. Folks around here want the Bombers to pick Demski, who they consider the best player. They don't seem to understand that good teams a built from the lines out. We've had a bunch of GM's who followed the best player, in their minds, strategy and it's only worked once with Muamba. Meanwhile, we've had a poor O line for years. Your post makes no sense. How do you get 7 good NI starters if you don't take the best player available (with consideration to availability around the NFL factored in)? Having a bunch of OL who might be ready to play in 2-3 years (right when they become free agents) won't help us. Gotta draft and develop those mid-round guys into being players. How many 1st round picks on Calgary's OL or Saskatchewan's? We desperately need players who can play now regardless of position. That is how the good teams approach the draft. SPuDS Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 Im in agreement of build the lines first and foremost.. Unless there is an absolute stud at a "non-traditional" roles... I simply dont know enough about demski but i do think we can grab him and a very good prospect at 11 and later..

If the OL players in the Draft are weak in general does your one way to Draft to success still work? The reason we have been weak is because of a lack of elite Cdns not just Cdn oline men.

So in 2011 we take MItchell first overall and Swiston later and hope he turns out.... how would that have worked out for this teams offensive line? Your idea is ridiculous as JBR has explained. When you are weak in all areas when it comes to NI depth you don't get picky. You take the best guy available. Blue-urns 1

Goalie Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 I'd take Demski for sure, But i'm not convinced he's still there when we pick, I think it's likely he goes 1st overall to Ottawa. Atomic 1
TBURGESS Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 I'm not talking about every draft and I don't think there's only one way to draft every year. I'm talking about this year. If we had 3 or 4 good starting O lineman, then drafting the best player regardless of position would make some sense. We don't so it doesn't. There are very few drafts that don't have some good O lineman in them. We get to pick #2, so we should get the 2nd best O lineman again this year. Assuming we choose correctly, and we haven't done that in the past, we get an upgrade to one of, if not THE worst, group we have.

Mr Dee Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 1st and foremost, if it can be determined that our 1st pick can start, then that's who we should grab. Offence, defence, doesn't matter. We need to be netting more NIs who can play, right from starters to quality backups. Keep our picks and make them count. Blue-urns and JuranBoldenRules 2
Tehedra Posted November 17, 2014 Report Posted November 17, 2014 I think that plays into it, if there's an oline who could be worked into plays this year and next year be a starter you go with him. Otherwise you go with Demski, can Demski get open quick enough to make our oline look better than it actually is? Is he a multidemsnional threat where he can do receiving and returning? Thank makes a difference as well
