The Unknown Poster Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 There's a lot more to the Ferguson story. The officer involved, along with 8 others, was hired from another police force in a city some 70 miles away which was disbanded due to persistant racially-biased attacks on black citizens which resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in civil suit settlements and the state government stepping in. The intial arrest of the Michael Brown was part of a "stop and frisk" illegal campaign wherein blacks and brown citizens are stopped on the street (arrested) for no reason and searched. The officer did not have any probable cause to stop Brown who was walking home with friends. Yes, Brown may have shoplifted a couple of cigars prior to the incident, but Officer Wilson knew nothing of that. Ferguson is 87% black but has a total of two blacks on the police force, and the two black officers have stated publicly that they experienced at-work harassment and discrimination. In his statements to the Grand jury and his interview on TV (for which he was paid over $100,000) 6'3" 220lb Wilson referred to Brown as an "it" and said he (Wilson) felt like a child being attacked by Brown. Right. Wilson also said he had his gun out before he called Brown over to the car. Does any of that sound like a benign attitude? Ugh. So disgusting. That said, even though I brought up Ferguson, to start going into the nuances of that case will really get us off track... EDIT: And the other thing to remember too -- people in Ferguson aren't rioting because Brown was murdered and a white cop got off. They are rioting/rioted because it is YET ANOTHER time something like this happened in that area. These incidents don't happen in a vacuum. It's a Doug Berry-esque powder keg that's been built for a long time. Nah. I dont believe the majority of rioters are rioting for any reason other than their own desire to cause mayhem and for others perhaps being caught up in it. This isnt social disobedience to effect change. Its lawlessness for lawlessness sake. The father of Brown demanding the crowd burn the place to the ground wasnt a call for justice. It was a call for violence.
NotoriousBIG Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 Well nobody point out to the rioters that the vast majority of murders of black people there are committed by fellow black people. Then they'll REALLY start burning each other's buildings down. I guess I could go tell them myself, like BriceDream suggested, but I don't want to get beaten to death by a bunch of teens with hammers. Of course most of the murders are black on black -- the town is 87% black. The issue is the police force not serving and protecting those people. And sure, walk into the middle of a race riot and start lecturing and you'll eat a hammer or two. Maybe go down there in a month and ask some people, respectfully, why they were/are so angry and distrustful. The answers might surprise you. Still might not convince you, but at least you offered them a chance to be heard instead of listening to your own narrative.
Rids Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 Just an aside to bring some numbers to it because some of the numbers tossed out in the thread aren't correct. From the 2010 census in Ferguson, Missouri: Population by Ethnicity Hispanic or Latino 260 Non Hispanic or Latino 20,943Population by RaceWhite 6,206African American 14,297Asian 103American Indian and Alaska Native 80Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander 4Other 92Identified by two or more 421 Total Population 21,203 St. Louis County: Population by EthnicityHispanic or Latino 25,024Non Hispanic or Latino 973,930Population by RaceWhite 701,948African American 233,029Asian 34,597American Indian and Alaska Native 1,962Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander 307Other 8,515Identified by two or more 18,596 Population Total Population 998,954 http://www.census.gov/2010census/popmap/ipmtext.php?fl=29:2923986 St. Louis County is basically the area west of St. Louis proper and east of St. Charles. Jennings, Missouri where Darrin Wilson was first hired as a police officer is 3.7 miles from Ferguson and their entire police department was released from their contracts due to corruption charges (missing money from cases) against those at the top. Much more involved than simply chalking it up to race issues. Jennings now contracts their police service from the city of St. Louis. While the Ferguson police department only has 5 members of visible minority they only have a force of 60 members total. However the St. Louis County Police has 845 members and also serves the area. Carry on.
17to85 Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 Racism is rampant among all races and it keeps perpetuating racism and inequality. As soon as everyone starts treating everyone else as equals it all goes away.Affirmative action or harming one group to prop up another doesn't help it, it just shifts hard feelings around. Treat everyone equally, don't just say it, actually do it and Treating people differently isn't the way to end discrimination. A good example is the reserve system for natives. It segregates people and treats them differently and look at all the problems are caused by that.

The same reactions you are hearing now are the same things that were said when American blacks began to agitate for equal rights in the 60's, and when union organizers tried to sign up members in the 40's and 50's. Anuyone who spoke up was dubbed as a radical foreign-influenced troublemaker who wanted a union or equal rights. The same kind of crapola has been said about women asking for equality. All of these have been called criminals, insane, perverts, radicals wishing to destroy a perfect society. Yes, Mike Brown's father called for destruction, but how many fathers would stand by when their sons or daughters were killed without provocation? As one officer from ST. Louis said in the aftermath, " this gun is not to protect you, it is to protect me from you". Two days ago, a 19 year old black university student in the US was stopped by the police because he had his hands in his pockets "suspiciously" and was "frightening people". You can see the video of that confrontation on the net.- the temperature was below freezing.

mbrg Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 It's not fair. Women/natives/blacks get all this great advice from white men on how they should feel and act and think and dress and speak, and what do we get in return? Not even a national holiday.

Right. Wilson also said he had his gun out before he called Brown over to the car. Does any of that sound like a benign attitude? This is all very wrong. There is a Ferguson thread for this discussion. Im cant tell you what is in Wilson's heart. Is he a racist? How do I know. How do you know. I suppose he is a six year cop without a single issue on his record, driving around all that time waiting for his chance to murder a black kid and start a race war. I suppose that is possible. On the other hand, its more likely that he was responding to a call, knew the description of the individual wanted who physically assaulted the store clerk (rather than just shoplifted a couple of cigars) and was assaulted. Wilson did have probable cause. Firstly his contact with Brown came about because Brown and his friend were walking down the middle of the road and swore at the cop when he advised them not to walk in the middle of the road. is that a good reason for police interaction? Maybe not. But it's still legitimate. Wilson had the description and saw the cigar box in Brown's hand. Probable cause. We can debate this forever but the available evidence does not point to a race-based murder by a cop. Wooo whooo!!!!!!!!!! Sanity makes an appearance!

basslicker Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 I only lasted about two weeks in my Stats class at U of M. But I think just common sense tells us that the percentage of anyone in the general populace might be different from the percentage in a specialized demographic, like athletics. But I could be completely wrong. Seems like a moot point regardless. Basically it just shows that you can't make that leap... 10% of the general population being gay has no bearing whatsoever on the percentage of gay athletes. What is the percentage of black people in the USA vs. the percentage of black people in the NBA? Doesn't correlate very closely does it? Or the percentage of black people in the NHL for that matter. No you can't make that leap in any reliable manner. So your point re: stats is correct. But the thing is, sexual orientation is different then race. You don't have a lot of black people in the NHL because there aren't a lot of black people tuned into it or growing up playing it. Or blacks playing lacrosse. Sexual orientation though is different. If you have a pulse, you could be gay. That's why the barriers are going to go down so fast. Thank you for saying this. Yes, there are more Afro-American people in the NFL than in the general population, but the reason for that can be clearly explained. Not so much for sexual orientation, but some people can't quite seem to grasp that. Explain it then We did. Pro TEAM sports is a social meat grinder. Until 10 years ago being called "gay" was a huge insult. Hell, probably still is in some locker rooms. What kid wants to go through that? So you figure skate, dive, run, do gymnastics, or do anything else where the entire culture isn't geared around being a "man." It's sad that 'being manly' is now considered bad. And we wonder why our society is collapsing under political correctness. Just because the media tells you most people believe in something is fine doesn't make it fact. Silent majority is just that...silent. They're not complainers and bleeding hearts. They keep their heads down, live well, and do their jobs. Please don't buy into the "real men are being oppressed" nonsense. It's low hanging fruit, to appeal to a "silent majority" of men who are unsatisfied in their lives. But rather than pick people up, it encourages white men to blame women or minorities, or gays. Look, if you are a healthy, straight, white male living in the US or Canada, you have a distinct advantage in probably 95% of the situations you encounter. The handful where you might not have an advantage? Boo hoo. You're a man. Grow a set and do something else. If I may play devils advocate... what other group do people say this to? No one else is told to just deal with it... No other group in society is in the driver's seat in virtually every context. Problem is, we only "see" it in when we (meaning white men) are seemingly getting the shaft -- like when a job posting says "preference given to minorities blah blah blah." That's when we notice it. Not the thousands of other contexts where being a white male in N America is actually, well, a pretty sweet deal. I think ISIS has an open application if you don't like the West.

Racism: the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Opression: Oppression is the exercise of authority or power in a burdensome, cruel, or unjust manner. It can also be defined as an act or instance of oppressing, the state of being oppressed, and the feeling of being heavily burdened, mentally or physically, by troubles, adverse conditions or people, and anxiety. Are you that much of a fricken loser that you need EVERYTHING equal before you step to the plate? Doesn't that make just as much sense as what you said? Yes, because for the last 200-400 years it's been the blacks and natives in positions of social, economic, and political power. * *And yes, that was dripping in sarcasm. OK, but it's not 200 years ago now. How equal is equal enough before you will start calling minorities "fricken losers" like you just did towards white people? Also, why are we talking about this here? Come on man. I didn't call white people fricken losers -- I called young, smart white men who sit around complaining about affirmative action fricken losers. And please -- go tell a black person in Ferguson, MO that "its no longer 200 years ago." In what sense? That a thug who breaks the law and attacks a police officer is allowed to get away with it because he's black, the cop is white and there is a racial devide in the city? Given the differing accounts given by witnesses to the shooting and the improper procedures by the police afterwards (to possibly cover things up) in their investigation it is not certain that he attacked the police officer. You need to do a little more research.
