Fascinates me how a team fires a Head Coach after a 10-6 season, only to let go his successor after two seasons.

Supposedly they're keeping DC Mel Tucker, who orchestrated arguably the worst defence in the league the past two years.

Kind of proof, how, at the end of the day, money (Cutler) won out. Pay 8 mill to make Trestman go away as opposed to 22 for Cutler.

Maybe Trestman can walk in to the 49ers job.... they need the help on offense and the team is extremely loaded with talent.

Maybe as OC or QB coach. Trestman won't be an NFL head coach ever again.

Never say never.

If he was younger and had more opportunity for a bounce back, I would agree. At age 59 though I think his only chance is to land a coordinator gig and then become HC on an interim if someone gets canned.

If he was younger

There are a lot of pretty old coaches in the NFL, pittsburgh defensive coach is well into his seventies. Same for Cowboys defensive coach. How old is Shanahan? Coughlin is mid sixties.

Two of the best coaches in NFL history came from the CFL.

Of course, no shortage of coaches in their 60s/70s, and he will be one if he continues to coach, but referring to Marc Trestman as a Head Coach in the NFL. Shanahan, as you reference, was 36 in his first shot, Coughlin 48. Years to grow and groom. Trestman took his first job at 57.

Others have time to take a lesser job and bounce back, or land a new gig right away after success in their first stop (Coughlin, likely Rex Ryan) Trestman not so much.

Aw, heck. It's a slow day. Let's start a "fire Kyle Walters" thread. We have the next four months with little news to complain about, so we might as well get started early.

we need to get another 18 page thread started about this guy again:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chijioke_Onyenegecha

You know it's the off-season when you can get long threads going about DB's that barely played...

Yes. Yes we should.

wonder where Rex Ryan will go?

Heard on the radio, 670Chicago, he has already asked for the Chicago job.

Think  his dad was the Super Bowl winning bears coach.

He'd be stuck with another crap quarterback there. for a year or so anyway.

Buddy Ryan was the defensive coordinator for the Bears between 78 and 85 .. created the 46 and was the guy behind the record setting 85 Bears defense ..

Rex .. not sure if he wants to get involved with another coach killing quaterback .. for all the tools that Cutler has physically .. the guy is a petulant whiny puss .. actually .. reminds me a lot of Burris in that when he's on .. he can be great .. but when he's bad .. he's god awful ..

Actually had to be physically separated during a game as they nearly came to blows .. was during their only loss of the 85 season.

Great buddy ryan ditka stories.

last week the jets gave the patriots everything they could ask for, the Pats barely beat the jets. When they still needed the win.

Jets defence is really something, specially defensive line.

Monday night vs the Dolphins. That's the first NFL game I ever watched and it made me a Dolphins fan. I remember telling my mom the team with the cool helmets would win that game.

Guess he was no Bud Grant. He should find work however as an oc down there or some such job. Can't see him coming back to the CFL anytime soon, with the bundle he can make down there.

Cutler is a coach killer. Even when he plays well he just gives off negative vibes all the time. All the tools to be a great one. But that's his problem, he has all the tools but he's also one himself. Always either pissed off or indifferent. Not a leader by any stretch of the word. How can you win with a player like that? He'll get the next HC in Chicago fired as well.

Yup. His history does not lie. If Trestman's mentoring, coaching, tutoring had no effect on Cutler, I say good luck Chicago. Cutler is hands down one of the worst team 'leaders' of all time.

As bad as it seemed, Cutler still had career highs under Trestman, which says something about his ability as an offensive mind.

Interesting that the Jaguars fired their OC today - Trestman and Jags HC Gus Bradley are good friends. Would be an ideal landing spot for both parties. Young offence, and the Jags would land a brilliant offensive mind without having to really pony up the big bucks.

Supposedly interviewed at ESPN about a television gig already as well.

I remember a MNF game three years ago. A rookie OT missed his block & Cutler was sacked. He pulled a Drew Tate & screamed at him on the field on national television. Even some of his teammates called him out on that one saying how wrong he was. That's not leadership. That's being an ass.

It's only called leadership when Tom Brady does it (which is pretty much every game)... at least that's what the media will have you believe...
