OldSchoolBlue Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Solid move. Love Watson as a player but he was hurt too much and we have other priorities now.
bearpants Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 How is this move playing amongst Rider fans? I was doing some browsing over at riderfans and the consensus seems to mostly be disappointment... no one is ready to blow up the entire team yet, but no one terribly thrilled with this move.... Common comment :"if he stays healthy, he could be a a good one"... sound familiar??
Noeller Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Girlfriend's first stitched jersey was a Watson that I had done for Christmas this year. She's not gonna be happy. Sigh. Nice picks tho...
Mike Posted January 29, 2015 Author Report Posted January 29, 2015 It's funny ... I remember over the past few months, we've all been talking about maybe trading Watson. So many of us (myself especially) were shooting down the hope of ever being able to get a 2nd rounder for Watson. Thank you Taman! Blue-urns and Bigblue204 2
voodoochylde Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 We also got the rights to a neg list player as well .. curious to see if anything comes of that .. blitzmore 1
Goalie Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Watson is 31 or going to be. Has injury issues. Love him when healthy but couldn't stay healthy. 4 picks in top 20. 3 in top 15 plus lots of salary opened up. Solid move really. Thinking Demski or Durant at 2 is very possible now yogi 1
Mike Posted January 29, 2015 Author Report Posted January 29, 2015 We also got the rights to a neg list player as well .. curious to see if anything comes of that .. I asked Darren Cameron if they could name that guy and he said league policy prevents them from it, but he said if they ever signed him, it'd be mentioned that he was acquired in this deal. voodoochylde 1

Brandon Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 I am surprised that nobody is complaining about the trade. Its actually refreshing to see! So Sask takes on more salary and we free up salary right as Heenan is going to free agency... This looks promising!

Every GM in the CFL knows where to go when they have a vet (or an aging vet) player they're willing to let go for draft pick(s).
M.O.A.B. Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Can't wait for the Free Agency and the CFL Draft !
The Unknown Poster Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Doesnt seem like an overly wise move on Tamen's part. Are they that desperate for a Non Import receiver that they'd take a chance on an aging and expensive player that never stays healthy? And Tamen trading picks? ha!
Adrenaline_x Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Why do we need to unload salary in order to put out large offers to FA?? The cap doesn't come into play in the offseason? I guess you don't want to cut someone for nothing if the salary cap becomes and issue.. but... Sustainability and cap management. Right.. But you don't have to be under the cap until the end of the year.. Sooo.. That gives you alot of time to get it sorted out with injuries etc. Like the move, but not sure why it would be about cap space.
Logan007 Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Liking this move as well. Wonder what Walters has in mind for the draft and what I like to call, Free Agency Day.
Jacquie Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Where the heck did we get the 26th overall pick? Did we make any other trades with Hamilton? The 26th pick is the second last of round 3 so it would have originally been their pick.

Noeller Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 So Doug Brown says Watson asked for a trade East to be closer to home. Curious if Taman flips him out there... Floyd 1

Sure the trade could have come later without harming our SMS any, However, the timing of this move does a few things to our benefit. One...it signals to potential FAs that we have had back door contact with that we are serious about spending money in FA. Two....it takes cap space immediately away from the Riders as they try to sort out who they can keep or more importantly can't keep. Three....it gets us a high pick in THIS year's draft...a draft that is being billed as the best since 2008. Watson was going to get dumped no matter what. This was the best time to do it.
GCn20 Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 So Doug Brown says Watson asked for a trade East to be closer to home. Curious if Taman flips him out there... If he was going to do that, I would think this would have ended up being a three way trade. My suspicion is that there were no takers out East....well none that were willing to pay what Taman paid.
Tracker Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 I continue to be impressed by Walters. It seems every move is part of a larger plan and trading an aging, injury-prone player (even though he played with heart) for a younger player plus bonuses is a very smart move.
NJBOMBERFAN Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Does anyone know who the player on the negotiation list was that was thrown into the trade?

basslicker Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Totally fine with this trade. Great job on getting something worthwhile for an oft-injured 30 year old. Typical Taman
Fatty Liver Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Sounds like a good deal, hopefully this opens the door for JFG who has earned his stripes imo. Blue-urns and Noeller 2
Mr. Perfect Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Kyle Walters being Kyle Walters. Great move to add a pick in a very deep draft was my initial thought as I woke up not too long ago. I may have missed it in my very quick skim of this thread, but I wonder what this means for the likelihood of taking Demski in the draft?
