Bombers Add Two To Roster

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announce today the club has added International linebacker TraShaun Nixon and National offensive lineman Tommy Griffiths.

Nixon (6-1, 235, New Mexico State, April 4, 1992, in Oxnard, California) finished 2014 on the Stampeders practice roster. He attended training camp with the Toronto Argonauts in 2014 and was also invited to a tryout camp with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints earlier last year. Nixon played two seasons (2012-13) for New Mexico State. He was second on the Aggies with 93 tackles in 2013 and led the team with 13 tackles for loss and three sacks. Nixon earned second-team all-Western Athletic Conference recognition in 2012 as he recorded 96 tackles, including 9.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception.

Griffiths (6-3, 285, Wilfrid Laurier, May 26, 1991 in Richmond Hill, Ontario) played 21 games over five seasons at Wilfrid Laurier University. Griffiths was named an OUA First Team All-Star in 2014, his first and only season as an offensive lineman, after making the switch from the defensive line. He was with the Toronto Argonauts through last season’s training camp.

Two more players? Wow.

How I long for the days of long periods of no player announcements,

no FA players,

no FA camps

and the discussion of who our 5 coaches are going to be.

Technically Nixon didn't finish the year on the PR in Calgary, he was cut after the Winnipeg game.

I'm curious though. I thought he was a good prospect when he signed with Toronto.

Can never have enough NI OL bodies. I don't care if it's "only TCF"....bring him in, and certainly worth a look.

He has the size and right passport. Could be a worthy project since he just recently started playing oline. Doesn't cost us a draft pick so why not.

Griffiths is likely a long term project for the PR or just a body who will give us some bodies at OL in mini-camp. He is an extreme longshot, but hey, he's got a better shot at making the CFL than he did yesterday. Hope he works hard and surprises.

Any of these fringe signing right now leave me a little skeptical with mini-camp nearing. Teams always struggle to have enough new recruits at each position for mini-camp and begin signing longshots to fill out the camp.

We need about 15 Olinemen to properly run a training camp; typically 5 imports and 10 NIs.  There will almost always be at least one undrafted NI Olineman at camp each year, just because of the numbers involved.  Worst case scenario is that he lives up to expectations.  Best case, he exceeds them.

I'm not sure why some people want to immediately write someone off as TCF... worst case scenario, he shows nothing and is released after camp.... no harm, no foul... best case scenario, he shows some promise and we keep him on the PR for development.... there is literally no risk for the team to bring in a buy like this...

Absolutely, he didn't cost us a draft pick. Nothing to lose.
