bustamente Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 Al Arbour passed away at the age of 82. How does he rate all time great coach. I think only Scotty Bowman rates higher in the modern era with Glenn Sather rounding out top three.
iso_55 Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 Arbour was a great coach. He took an expansion team with no talent other than Denis Potvin that first year (1972-73) to 4 consecutive Stanley Cup championships (1980-83). I don't think any other NHL coach ever did that. In my opinion, he was as good a coach as Scotty Bowman & right up there with the best.
Ducky Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 One of the best.... easily top 10 and arguably top 5. He did have a LOT of talent though when they went on that 4 year run. I think Smith and Nystrom were there in their first season.
IC Khari Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 One of the the best, IMO top three. He also came back after retirement in the late 80's and led a pretty good Islanders team for a few seasons in the early 90's. His team's victory over a stacked Penguins team in the 93 playoffs ranks as one of the biggest upsets in playoff history.

Ducky Posted August 30, 2015 Report Posted August 30, 2015 He sure does, he built a championship caliber team in less than 10 years. Wonder if he knows anything about Canadian football?
