Tracker Posted July 1, 2023 Report Posted July 1, 2023 Canadian wildfire smoke could choke North America 'until September': report Smoke from the more than five hundred climate-change-driven wildfires raging throughout Canada is choking large swaths of the United States and has spread as far as Europe — and the question of when they will end is burning in the minds of the millions of people whom they are affecting. In Saturday's edition of The Atlantic, correspondent Caroline Mimbs Nyce dove into what is driving the infernos and why their scope is so unprecedented. "The problem is, Canada is not trying to put out just one fire. Right now, a map from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre shows a country spotted red with blazes, like it's come down with a nasty case of chicken pox," Nyce wrote. "Remarkably, these fires aren't clustered in a single region: Their spread is the northern equivalent of New York and California burning at the same time, with additional fires stretched in between. According to the CIFFC, more than 509 fires are active in Canada, 253 of which are classified as 'out of control.'"

Tracker Posted July 5, 2023 Report Posted July 5, 2023 Monday, July 3rd, 2023, was the hottest day ever recorded on Earth, The Guardian reported on Tuesday. "The average global temperature reached 17.01C (62.62F), surpassing the August 2016 record of 16.92C (62.46F), as heatwaves sizzled around the world," explained the British outlet, which compiled data from the United States National Centers for Environmental Prediction. The unprecedented warmth even affected the planet's polar regions. Retired professor Eliot Jacobson posted a ClimateReanalyzer.org graphic on Twitter showing "that temperatures above freezing" were "reaching all the way to the coast of Antarctica near the Thwaites glacier." Experts reiterated that the relentless burning of fossil fuels is fueling the disruptions to Earth's climate and that humanity's failure to cease emitting greenhouse gases will lead to a cascading series of crises. "People around the world are already enduring climate impacts, from heatwaves, wildfires, and air pollution to floods and extreme storms. Global warming is also exacerbating crop losses and the spread of infectious diseases, as well as migration," Global Climate and Health Alliance Executive Director Jeni Miller said, as quoted by The Guardian. "The extraction and use of coal, oil, and gas harm people's health, are the primary driver of warming and are incompatible with a healthy climate future. That's all the more reason that governments must prepare to deliver a commitment at Cop28 to phase out all fossil fuels, and a just transition to renewable energy for all." Climate scientist Friederike Otto of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment at Britain's Imperial College London warned that an overheated Earth is "a death sentence for people and ecosystems." blue_gold_84, Fatty Liver and Sard 3
blue_gold_84 Posted July 5, 2023 Report Posted July 5, 2023 And then yesterday was even hotter (17.18 C): https://www.cbc.ca/news/climate/global-heat-record-1.6897445 Quote The entire planet sweltered for the two unofficial hottest days in human record-keeping Monday and Tuesday, according to University of Maine scientists at the Climate Reanalyzer project. For two straight days, the global average temperature spiked into uncharted territory. After scientists talked about Monday's dramatic heat, Tuesday soared 0.17 C even hotter, which is a huge temperature jump in terms of global averages and records. The same University of Maine climate calculator — based on satellite data and computer simulations — forecasts a similar temperature for Wednesday that would be in record territory, with an Antarctica average that is a whopping 4.5 C warmer than the 1979-2000 average. High temperature records were surpassed July 3 and 4 in Quebec and northwestern Canada and Peru. Cities across the U.S. from Medford, Oregon to Tampa have been hovering at all-time highs, said Zack Taylor, a meteorologist with the U.S. National Weather Service. Beijing reported nine straight days last week when the temperature exceeded 35 C. We're ******. JCon 1

Most Canadians are being asked to make sacrifices to lifestyle in a country that is very near its carbon neutrality goal in comparison to most of the world. Look, I will not dispute that climate change is a massive world issue that very badly needs drastic changes amongst the global population but let's not lay the blame on this at the feet of Canadians and put it where it belongs. If our planet is going to change our country's role in this isn't to eliminate our emissions, although it would help, our role has to be to take our place as a leading nation on this planet and get China, Russia, USA, India, Indonesia etc to cut their carbon emissions. It is pointless for Canadians to bang their head against the wall for 1.5% of the world's emissions that have a large % reabsorbed by our vast forests and waters. It is bass ackwards for our main focus to be on stopping our own emissions, our main focus HAS to be on stopping others emissions with carbon emissions reductions being a secondary target. We, as Canadians, could make the decision to go completely carbon neutral tomorrow along with the financial and societal repercussion that would come with that kind of rapid disruption to our economy and lives and the global warming crisis would not be slowed one iota. Leaders lead by example, they do their part, don't point fingers at others and take responsibility for their own actions. How do you propose Canada force other countries to decrease their emissions if we can't even get a vast segment of our own population to give up wasteful and inefficient practices, such as heating 4000 sq. ft. houses for 3-4 people which is common, or driving a F-350's to work on a daily basis, which is also fairly common. If we had a lick of intelligence, conspicuous consumption would be an embarrassment, not a goal most people in our society endlessly pursue, egged on by Mega-Corp and the idiot box. My point was, you said this: Always criticizing Trudeau daily but when push comes to shove is a true coward supporting the Liberals. This Champagne Socialist has it pretty good with his cars & fancy suits. As well as his growing wealth & pension all courtesy of the Canadian taxpayer. Then said this about PP: I can't. He's not PM. Also, there is another reason to do it. Singh has more say with Trudeau in power than we would with PP. Call it being paid off if you want, but if it allows him to further some of the goals of his party, it's a strategy that works for him. He likely loses out on all of that with the Cons in power, so it definitely makes sense for him to prop up the Liberals at this time. Tracker 1
