Didn’t they once claim Winnipeg was their land? I’m sensitive to these issues but they have to be realistic. The agreement that brought Manitoba into confederation was supposed to set aside 140 million acres of land (which included what's now Winnipeg) for the Metis people. That never happened hence the years of court fighting which the MMF ended up winning. That's led to years of trying to negotiate a settlement (good luck putting a dollar value on that land now!) that still hasn't been finished. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/after-140-years-and-a-review-of-2000-volumes-of-documents-metis-win-land-claim/article9505274/ JCon 1

What will be the cost of legal fees and lost profits? And that's before any eventual settlement is factored in. This is just ****-measuring by the government. "Oh we shouldn't have to pay." This is Canada. You pay First Nations for everything. Fight it in court at your own peril. It's exactly what Pallister called it 'persuasion money' and no country or province should have to put it up with it when it's economic viability is at stake. There are no grounds for the MMF claim and you do not want to set a precedent by paying them persuasion money. Fight it in court and sue for costs and damages and proceed with the project without delay. Let the rule of law apply. Edited March 23, 2018 by pigseye because

Some times it is better to settle. Take the Govt paying off the torture detainees. I might have read the news wrong but the MB Gov's big problem is with settlement money for future inconveniences.

That's not good for an already troubled crown corp or the government responsible for it. You also say proceed without delay... good luck with that. It could get blocked by the courts while the case is pending or you could end up with groups physically blocking the project from happening (or at least causing delays). Atomic 1

That's a huge gamble and history is not on the government's side when it comes to disputes with Indigenous people. Hydro has a whole division dedicated to creating and maintaining relationships with First Nations because it is financially disastrous when things break down. This isn't an isolated case where Hydro can just say "**** you guys" and walk away. The relationship has to be a strong one or Hydro is totally handcuffed.

Yeah Im not sure the Premier means that although his argument is sound but not really in his favour. The MMF is saying pay us now and we'll make sure our grandkids dont screw with you. Premier is saying how can you give away future rights of people not even born yet. On the other hand, I've often said, this constant fighting with Aboriginal groups is ridiculous and should be settled immediately and forever. If they are owed, pay them and be done. Then again, one of the biggest thing holding Aboriginals back is the reserve system and the corruption of their own leadership and you cant fix that. If $70 million is a small price to pay so be it. But only if there is a sound legal reason. if its extortion, then obviously dont pay it. The province is the boss though. if they want to handle it a certain way, thats their call and they wear it if it goes bad.

Pally is so far ahead in the polls he could go to court and lose more then 70 and still ride high. Win-win.

A few years ago it was Ukraine day and night. Now, no interest in the Ukraine. There's a remarkable trail of deaths and plotting related to Russia, and Russians living in the West. Mark F Posted March 28, 2018 Report Posted March 28, 2018 (edited) Saudi Arabia maybe finally getting some long needed scrutiny. No thanks to the gubmint. NY Times. Quote NEW YORK — A U.S. judge on Wednesday rejected Saudi Arabia's bid to dismiss lawsuits claiming that it helped plan the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and should pay billions of dollars in damages to victims. U.S. District Judge George Daniels in Manhattan said the plaintiffs' allegations "narrowly articulate a reasonable basis" for him to assert jurisdiction over Saudi Arabia under the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA), a 2016 federal law. Talk about get your popcorn ready. 15 of 19 World trade centre plane hijackers were Saudi Arabian. Edited March 28, 2018 by Mark F
Jacquie Posted March 29, 2018 Report Posted March 29, 2018 Wouldn't be surprised to see Trump try to stop the lawsuit since he has extensive financial dealings with the Saudis.
The Unknown Poster Posted April 3, 2018 Report Posted April 3, 2018 Ummm isn’t this exactly what she was tying to do to those victims of parkland? Silence them through intimidation? All the kids did in response was make her sponsors have to be accountable to her content.
