FrostyWinnipeg Posted May 5, 2016 Report Posted May 5, 2016 Stempy had 6 in 18 games. That deserved a contract.
Goalie Posted May 5, 2016 Report Posted May 5, 2016 (edited) You know what it got him? A pro tryout contract with NJ. Jets weren't the only team who said thanks but no thanks. 29 actually all 30 said the same. Not sure why still going on about Stempniak anyway to be honest Edited May 5, 2016 by Goalie Jimmy Pop 1

Not sure why still going on about Stempniak anyway to be honest Best case scenario, Stemp somehow allows the Jets to get into the playoffs and lose in the first round again. Worst case scenario, Stemp being here causes the Jets to miss out on drafting #2. Which is way better then another sweep in the playoffs. Anyone touting the "why didnt we sign Stemp" nonsense just doesnt see the big picture. Like Goalie said, NO ONE wanted him. He had to do a pro try out. And Stemp wasnt going to get first line minutes in Winnipeg, period. Silly debate. Jimmy Pop 1
sweep the leg Posted May 5, 2016 Report Posted May 5, 2016 Hopefully we sign Stempniak this summer and reverse the mistake we made last year. Mr Dee 1
Rich Posted May 5, 2016 Report Posted May 5, 2016 Actually the debate isn't at all about resigning Stempniak. I have said I'm perfectly fine with what has happened last year. The debate is about the model that Chevy preached was to let prospect "over ripen" in the AHL before bringing them up to the NHL. And he hasn't done that at all. The argument was he didn't have to be bring all those rookies onto the team this past season when they weren't ready but he did anyway. So has he changed his philosophy and "rushing" rookies in or is this a blip in the radar. sweep the leg 1

I have no problems with Trouba or Ehlers starting when they did. We should not have started the season with both Copp and Petan in the starting lineup. They were handed those jobs with virtually no competition. Make the kids earn it in the AHL and take a spot on an injury call up. Chevy didn't let Petan ripen in the AHL, he had him penciled in at the beginning of last season and he obviously wasn't ready so he got sent down and we really had no backup plan. Did Chevy pencil him in or did Maurice? If Maurice went to him near the end of camp and said, look this Petan kid isn't ready, get me another veteran - I have a hard time believing we wouldn't have brought someone in. Agree completely with the sentiment though, just wonder who should shoulder more of the blame. I look at Tampa doing as well as they are now even without future Leafs HOF Stamkos. How long did Johnson, Kucherov, Palat and others spend in the AHL? That should be our model. The Moose should be a fun group next year with all the youngsters in the org.
The Unknown Poster Posted May 5, 2016 Report Posted May 5, 2016 Its not like they had 6 rookies starting the season. Petan was a mistake that most of us called. Ehlers was ready to play. Copp was a 4th liner who's minutes were managed. Not every case is the same. If we drafted McDavid should we have sent him to the Moose "just because". Some players are ready and some are not. I think the over rippen thing was in regards to players that just arent ready yet. Lowry had time to develop on the Moose. Helle did. Morrissey is. Kossy is. Armia did. Chairot did. I see no change in their philosophy other then, if a player is ready, he's ready. Goalie and BomberFan 2

Really? Who was available that was that much better at the time? You can't be afraid of rolling the dice once in a while. Maybe we should let Connor or Laine "ripen" in the AHL too just since that"s how you're " supposed" to do it. Sign some over rated vets to fill in, in the mean time.

At no point have I said Laine or Ehlers should have been in the 'A'. It is the other prospects that were rushed. As for the 'ripen' and 'supposed' to do it, these are Chevy's words, not mine. But last year he wasn't really following what he has been preaching, which has been the point I've been making in this whole discussion.
FrostyWinnipeg Posted May 8, 2016 Report Posted May 8, 2016 Will Connor, Laine make us the youngest team in the league? Shudders.

That's the thing though...that's what training camp is for, see who will fill those roles. Roll the dice, see if what you have can atleast do the job. I'd rather see that than sign a few vets just to bide the time. Otherwise it's one step forward two back.
Floyd Posted May 8, 2016 Author Report Posted May 8, 2016 Every other season, everyone has had to work for their spot... last year, Ehlers, Burmi, Copp were all handed spots without much competition... there is no argument saying that this was NOT a departure from Chevy's development strategy. Ehlers - Jets had no choice really... Burmi and Copp were mistakes, Copp's development is suffering from playing in NHL too early imo. Burmi is a good replacement for Slater... not much else. As for arguing against signing Stempniak or giving him a PTO at no cost... the Jets played Thorburn on the 3rd line for half the season. Nothing else to say. Don't forget this is a whole different conversation if the Jets don't end up with 2nd overall... if we're picking 7-8th that's not much difference between picking 14-15th..

kelownabomberfan Posted May 8, 2016 Report Posted May 8, 2016 Laine rips it up in second straight game. For the second straight game, 18-year-old winger Patrik Laine set the tone for Finland with two goals and an assist in Sunday’s 5-1 win over Germany. Again from the left faceoff circle, Laine added his fourth of the tournament on the power play with three seconds left. Chants of "Laine! Laine!" erupted from the Suomi supporters. Goalie Posted May 8, 2016 Report Posted May 8, 2016 (edited) Stafford played on the third line quite a bit. Stemp was on NJ first line. Stop with the Stempniak stuff. It's pointless. All he does is take a spit away from a guy like Armia or a bottom 6 guy cuz he wouldn't be playing 1st or 2nd line or PP minutes here. He was a rental. That's all he was. They got swept. They moved on. Time to move on. It's been more than a year now. Let it go. Edited May 8, 2016 by Goalie Ducky and Blueballz 2

Ducky Posted May 8, 2016 Report Posted May 8, 2016 So, here is the thread I was looking for last night after having too many beer in the casino. shudda, wudda, cudda, ... didn't...he is a FA again and the Jets won't offer him a contract again.....are we going to be discussing him next off-sason too? "Oh God, if we had only signed Stemp, all of our troubles would not have existed." Good grief Charlie Brown. TO will draft Matthews and the Jets will draft Laine....wow. Laine will have an immediate impact with the Jets unlike Ehlers, Scheif, Lowry, Trouba, etc... in the near future he is going to be making mega-bucks as a superstar playing for the Winnipeg Jets alongside some other stars like Scheif, Ehlers, Connor, Trouba, Helle and who knows who else. There will still be a good LHD and probably a pretty C prospect around the 12th pick or so. I would love to see Chevy trade up to snag a good C or LHD prospect with Chicago's pick and whatever else.
The Unknown Poster Posted May 9, 2016 Report Posted May 9, 2016 Did I miss where we traded stemp for stafford?
