five starters on offence should help.  Like to see six though, with 4 NI hogs on the OL.  Maybe I'm just old-fashioned.

It will be interesting to see what Manase Foketi and Travis Bond can bring to the Oline depth. Bond is 6'6" 330 lbs. while the much smaller (ha) Foketi is also 6'6" and is worth keeping an eye on.

As Tait, in his wrap up says - "All of this is to say that the Bombers have finally stockpiled a variety of pieces, both Canadian and American, that could make the offensive line no longer a revolving door of talent."

Let's hope so.

3 oline. Kohlert. Harris. Shologan. Westerman. That's 7. My guess is 8 is Bucknor or a safety.

Trent Corney's rookie camp journal - Day 2

"I de-stress by doing push-ups in my room. That’s one of the reasons I gained a lot of weight in high school. I had bad anxiety in high school and started lifting and that’s how I got big.

So I was doing sets of 80 push-ups last night in my room. I did five sets of 80 and my last set was 90, just to see how many I could do. My chest is about to tear right now."

Just reading that made me tired.

It can be a bit of a nomadic life, chasing the football dream. It’s often about living out of a suitcase for weeks and cell phone bills dominated with call after call to agents and family members.

And all of it can become an endless blur of faces, from players to coaches to equipment guys to the receptionist at the hotel.

Jace Davis has lived this for a while now with stops in Baltimore, Houston and Denver over the last couple of years.

What the former Northern Colorado star receiver wants more than anything right now is a chance to find a football home with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“That’s exactly what we call it: Trying to find a home,” said Davis Thursday after day two of Bomber rookie camp. “You go into every training camp searching for a home, trying to find that spot where you fit. Not everybody fits everywhere.

It’s early – way too early – to draw any conclusions from just a couple days of camp. But Davis has popped off the page as a legitimate candidate for an import receiving spot in a Bomber pass-catching corps that already has Darvin Adams, Weston Dressler, Ryan Smith and Rory Kohlert as locks.

He’s listed at 6-1, 210 pounds and has already shown an ability to make catches in traffic and also attack vertically with his speed.

“We need to complement our receiving corps with some size,” said Bombers Head Coach Mike O’Shea when asked if they were looking for a specific type of receiving to round out their corps.

“But we’ve got a good battle going on out there with some guys who are six feet tall and a little thicker. They all run, they all learn well. It will be an interesting training camp to see who emerges.

“Jace Davis seems to be the whole package,” O’Shea added. “He seems to be able to do whatever you ask him, move positions and digest information very quickly as well having good hands and speed and being a very good route runner.”

Davis’ name might be familiar to some Bomber diehards. He was actually with the Bombers for a brief spell last season. Very brief, it turns out.

“I was here last year for about a day, but I had a broken rib. It was literally a day,” said Davis. “My ribs were hurting and I went to see the doctor and found out I had two broken ribs so they sent me back home. Then they called me and said they wanted me back up for training camp. I’m thankful the Bombers gave me an opportunity to play again and I’m just trying to take advantage of that.

“I’m itching to get into a game. I can’t wait for the preseason game,” Davis added. “It honestly can’t come soon enough. All the work you do in the offseason and then all the practices, that’s for the game. That’s when you get to do what you love to do.

“That’s why I’m here.”

 

STANDING OUT:

Making good impressions on Thursday were:

• DB Johnny Patrick, the former NFL’er with 37 games on his resume.
• REC Thomas Mayo, who was particularly sharp in the morning session.
• S Taylor Loffler, the Bombers’ third pick in the 2016 draft looks comfortable in the middle of the secondary.

“He’s a good football player. He’s smart,” said Mike O’Shea of Loffler. “Sitting in on the meetings today and listening to him, he knows his stuff very quickly. He’s vocal and helping guys out. He seems to have a veteran presence about him, which I always appreciate.”

THE WAITING IS THE HARDEST PART:

DB C.J. Wilson still hasn’t participated in the first two days of rookie camp. The former NFL’er, who lost part of two fingers in a fireworks accident last July, has not officially signed yet until he clears NFL waivers.

 

TOUGH ENOUGH:

O’Shea was asked about University of Manitoba receiver Alex Vitt, the club’s seventh-round draft pick earlier this month.

“When I think of Alex Vitt, I think of these clips of him playing UBC and waggling in from the slot and absolutely tattooing a linebacker,” said O’Shea. “Our job will be to put Alex Vitt into situations where he can show just how tough he is. He’s a tough, tough football player who likes to play that style of game. Let’s get him on special teams and see what he can do and give him an opportunity to be successful in that area. He’s obviously an accomplished receiver also, but it’s important for these guys to understand how they can make the team and I think he does.

I went to practice today...not very many fans there...and despite not being sunny, the weather was still enjoyable.

One of the first things I noticed was that there was quite a bit more sustained activity than there was last year. My son and I actually felt bored at times watching practice last year...not sure if it is because Lapo is running things or because Belfueille was just that bad.

During practice also noticed that Richie Hall was very involved, in stark contrast to Tim Burke who always stood around with his arms folded.

There were some players who caught my attention for one reason or another.

Impressed so far with Alex Vitt, who ran plenty today and can catch. He is not a speed demon but is fast enough and looks like he can handle the rough going.

Also impressed with Gerrard Sheppard #88, tall and rangy, who seems to glide when he runs, and catches virtually everything thrown at him. Also Kevin Cone looks good, perhaps a tad slower.

Julian Talley is wearing Denmark's old number...and looks like he might be as good as, if not better.

All the running backs look good, and Carlos Anderson #34, looks fully healed. #32 Tim Flanders looks very good as well.

On defence...Trent Corney #43 is very fast and looks very strong. Looks like he will have to learn more technical aspects as he did not beat all the lineman he faced like he may have thought he would.

Taylor Loffler #16 is tall with plenty of speed, might be a very nice surprise.

#90 Emmanual Dieke, is tall, fast, and strong, he beat several of the lineman with ease. (just watch, he will be one of the first cuts because I said this).

both the punters were hitting some good ones today with good hang time.

It was an enjoyable practice to watch, especially with no long break to cut up the practice.

Here's a day 2 report made to the Winnipeg Jets and Bomber Armchair Coaches by a fellow Bomber fan Cory H.....

"Just got home from the bombers rookie camp and their were a few players that definitely stood out to me and also Darren bauming (was sitting with him for a lil bit and was a bit star struck haha) 

- #77 Alex Vitt: WR drafted 7th round this year's cfl draft and a u of m product.  He was taking first team reps the whole camp and made 4 really good catches beating defenders.  One of which was an in tight coverage toe sideline catch

- #43 Trent Corney: DE drafted 2nd round 2016. Explosive off the line and almost had two sacks and has a really good inside moves 

- #34 Carlos Anderson: Rb.  Honestly looked incredible.  I can see why he beat out Paris cotton last year.  Unfortunately he got injured in the pre season game against the ticats. Had a brace on but it didn't seem to slow him down. Will definitely be great behind Harris 

- # 1 Jane Davis : Wr.  Had great speed and out ran defensive backs all day long.  Made some great catches,  including a couple deep bombs. 

- # 17 Johnny Patrick : DB.  Didn't get beat much if at all.  Had a couple nice pass deflections and interception.  In fact the only one I saw all day. 

Anyways those are my top 5 I saw and to look out for through the rest of camp.  Remember this was rookie camp so we'll have to see on Sunday how they match up against the veterans."

Bombers are still 2 guys over the limit apparently so i think much like Jernigan, this is just a transaction to help them get down to the limit a bit easier.

Personally id rather see us get the best OL out possible and make the ratio work else where. Im tired of watching our willy get smacked around.

I think the change in offense alone will help our Willy take less abuse. Lots of options for quick short passes on the team the way I see it, throw it behind the guys trying to kill the qb and all of a sudden they might slow down a bit. Harris especially is as good a pass catcher as he is rusher so that should in theory help out a lot.

Way, way past time, that we recruited some real stud import OL types.... while pursuing the long term plan (enough quality Canucks on line)
