TSN just reported that Banks has been suspended for two games for violating the drug policy.

Im not up on recreational drugs. Apparently MDA is similar to MDMA  but its more potent and lasts longer. Two guys in one year popped and suspended for rave drugs is pretty silly and dumb. I guess its a new era for the cfl. Once the bastion of recreational drug offenders, but no more.

Is there a chance this isn't a case of taking Molly at a club, but rather a similar chemical being found in some workout "supplements" that these guys might be taking? Or is there just a really big Molly problem with these American guys in Canada??

I can remember life as a twenty something almost athlete. When you get that many overgrown kids together there is going to be rec drug use. You would think that athletes wouldn't risk everything but the game of football is a big risk. Just stepping onto the field is a risk.

People like to think athletes are above the temptations that other people face but money and fame do not make you into a new superhuman that is invulnerable to all the vices faced by other people.

My favourite is the old "Wow if I was making millions I wouldn't <insert silly action>".

Exactly. Not hard to see how many more opportunities to engage in self-destructive behavior present themselves when you are a professional athlete/actor etc. making 6 figures.

Noeller, MDA is strictly a party drug. May also be used by docs as an anti-depressant but would never be in an suppliment..(Sorry my quoting is broken still for some odd reason)

Hopefully these young dudes learn something by getting caught/suspended. The penalty, being two games, still allows them to practice and be on the sidelines during the games they are serving? Or they are not allowed to be present during practices until after the second game? 

 

According to the cfl cflpa policy, page 21

from the time the player is notified, they cannot participate in team activities and shall loss pay. Except if the team allows them to practice on a without pay basis.

Having no experience in this world of workout supplements or performance enhancing drugs, is it a difficult process in certain scenarios to fully understand what specific ingredients are in the supplement I'm taking? For example, are manufacturer's not labeling clear enough? Is this a concern for athletes who don't want to cheat?

Not traditionally if bought from reputable sources like popeyes or gorilla Jacks.. they are clearly defined on the packages..it's when you go outside the norm (online or "specialists") where the lines blur.  I myself have been using a post and pre workout for awhile and got middling results but if I wanted to spend more (and step into the grey area) I could get my hands on some stuff that is not "legal" for sports or competition but not illegal for me to purchase or use.

Problem is that it's an unregulated industry (for the most part). A supplement company, although 'reputable', could still have errors on their labels. Then you add in third party resellers like Popeye's or Gorilla Jacks, who have no idea what's actually in the products they sell, and you create an area of risk.

It's completely stupid that the CFL is okay with letting players go on the field and risk lifelong injury, and yet it gets its panties in a knot about players doing club drugs.

Health Canada has a very strict guideline in what they allow in supplements. (more so then America) Yes a supplement brand could potentially get by regulations by lying whats really in the supplement but a company like Popeyes only deals with reputable Supplement brands and the chances of that are slim to none. Any company like Jack3d eventually got busted 3-4 years ago and you're not likely to see this happen again. I manage a Popeyes and I could tell you we are very careful in what we bring in. Our integrity is on the line as well.

I would have to assume it's recreational use. Young pro athletes with money who want to unwind from work. Wouldn't surprise me one bit.
